No the ET trans from 1978 to the mid 85ish era had the Three bolt gear shift like this.
That's my Australain 1980 Cortina Station Wagons gearshift, with the replacment steel hemishere to stop the gearshift falling off during fast changes....a normal Pinto/import Capri problem until they stopped making them like that in 1978 or so.
Godd riddens to bad rubbish....

Sadly there are about 15 rear drive gearboxes used behing Ford four cylinder engines from 1959 to 1987, so please excuse me if I didn't "get it" when you first asked.
You probably need this
Johns 5 speed T9 shifter, same 3 bolt pattern as as your ET78. He might be able to help you out.
He's a Volvo guy, but lemme tell you, he knows his stuff. Now that T9 parts are being made is such large numbers again, Volvo rear drive 240's and 740's are getting T9 gearboxes again.
If you talk nice to him between 10 and 11 am his time, he might just help you find a quick shift locally.

They should be able to get you the quick shifter.
From what I read back in my 1976 edition of "The Encyclopedia of The Motorcar"
the Escort RS Mexico Mk2 1600/1800 got the German made US market Pinto gearbox with the shifter that didn't come off. Ford England and Australia kept using this useless shifter design, its seams like you Americans and Canadians just don't enjoy gear levers comming off as much as people from some other British Colonies. Thnka G""d you guys complain, otherwise no one would have gotten anther good gear shift out of Ford ever again...
I can't remember when they updated it, possibly 1974 for the 2.3 Mustangs.
Note that all these gearboxes supersead the "Hummer" German Type F 4 speed box with unique side lever shift rods, fitted in 2.6 Capri from 72-74s with its old passenger side external linkage kickout. Hummer and Rocket are related, but differnt cases.
For a full rundown on the Seven types of post Dagenham era RWD gearboxes, (2000E "Bullet", Type 2, Type 3, Type E 'Rocket' box, Type 9, Type F "Hummers" and Type 5)
see
http://www.zetecinside.com/xr2/gearbox.shtml
and
http://www.zetecinside.com/xr2/gearbox1.shtml
I've wrongly stated that they are related. Some parts swap over, but the Hummer case is different, with side loaded gears, as opposed to top loaded gears. Internally, they are all offshoots of the old side loaded Dagenham Zephyr gearbox used in the early 65 Mustangs.
The Pinto probably got the Type E Rocket gearboxwith its updated 3 bolt shifter when it went 2.3 in 1975.
The US shifter is the later European T9 shifter, made about four years before the 5 speed came out.
Your car actually spoon fed money to the Europeans to make the T9 5 speed happen.
Overseas, the light, short build of the gearboxes ensures it still has parts back up.
You can get anything for it, including the alloy case, similar to the US 1980 to 1983 T140 5 speed, but based on the Rocket/Hummer case, with capabilty to be either 4 or 5 speed.
This is due to the Kent, BDA Cosworth an YB Sierra Turbo Cosworth and Merkur XR4Ti sharing the nearly the same block pattern, and these engines went into World Rally winning Escorts, Zakspeed Capris..
The Cologne Capri 2.8'S AND 3.0's used this gearbox, so people still use it today, becasue the Ford Works ZF 5speed or BMW Getrag 260's are quite expensive. A good Borg Warner or Tremec T5Z gearbox is only factionally stronger stock. So the Europeans and British Isles use the cheep and plentiful T9 and Four Spped Type E gearbox all the time.
They make a short, quick shifter by using a 3/8" alloy spacer, and the early shifter above with a frankenstien neck bolts. It operates an undampened shifter with no rubber internal mount, so its very good. The other option is shifter relocation, which can be done, but it might require floor modifications.
Option 1.
Quaife Type 9 Quick shift
http://www.burtonpower.com/quaife-qu...erra-qs04.html
The additional supplies are the mega tough the brass shifter saddle,
the 3/8 " spacer plate,
They will give you the ultimate in shift quality.
Option 2.
Find a used T9 gearbox, shorten the input shaft, and use the 5 speed gearbox and the stuff above.
Although only used in factory cars with 205 hp and 206 ft lbs torque, its able to take 250 hp and 250 lb-ft pretty easily with the Quaife gear set. Principally because it has a TopLoader main to layshaft spacing of about 3.03"
See http://www.fordpinto.com/general-hel...3-bellhousing/
The sequential shfters for Rocket and T9 gearboxes are a bit pricey....they go with 250, 375 flywheel hp and even 300 lb-ft custom 6 speed gearboxes based on the old German made Mustang 2.3 4 speed....nice to dream.
There is also an intermediate T9 baased Sequential box
which lookes a heck of a lot like the Mexican made 80-83 RAP T140 5 speed in a different T9 style trans case....makes you wonder who was copying whom...
Then the hugely expensive 56T/60T gearbox, also sequential.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Meb5NIXeU2A
The design base started off as the lowly Rocket gearbox, then got a 5th gear to become the T9, and then a layshaft center change to 3.15" to become the Quaife 56 and 60t sequential.
