Thread: Dominators?

  1. #1

    Default Dominators?

    Ok,
Could some with info about these cars let me know when these where made? I've seen a 85 and now a 90 came up for sale is kansas city. I was told these was kinda like a kansas twister thing. Where kansas dealers modded them. Anyone got a link of engine specs of any info?

they were built by a Ford dealer in Lee's Summit MO. I have a local friend who has a 88 Dominator and saw a 84 Dominator at a car show a few weeks back. Both were highly modified from when they started but my friend with the 88 bought his new, and it had a off road H pipe, flowmasters, cold air kit, short shifter and 3.27 gears. That was the only mods his received in 88

They were made from about '83 through about '90. The dealer got into some trouble over the exhaust modifications, as they made the cars non-emissions compliant.

It is my understanding all documentation on these cars are gone. They are barely recognized by others.

I've got a Canyon Red '85 Dominator currently under restoration, and we have a fellow FEP member on here with a really sweet looking '86 version.

Mine has the dealer installed long tube headers, a Ford Aluminum Intake with holley 4 bbl, a Ford Motorsport "Extra Performance Ignition with built-in Rev Control" box made by MSD for Ford, a functional hood scoop with a dual snorkel air cleaner drilled with holes in the top about 1" in diameter all around the top and a rubber gasket to seal it to the hood. It did not have the 140 mph speedo though, bummer. Mine does have T-Tops.

I just got the interior removed. It will need floor pans, but all in all the car is not bad. I'm getting ready to take to the body shop (for those familiar with this project, it did go on hiatus due to a daughter getting married, can you say cha ching!) which has taken longer than I wanted.

I will snap pics before it goes.

I really like that black/tan 86. I had 2 black/tan/tan 89's a while back but sold both. I've been around Mustangs all my life and never saw another combo like that out of all the car shows Id been to. I'm trying to buy a 86 GT thats white/tan with T-tops now to get tan interior again.

Thanks, it's a real pretty car and gets a lot of comments. At 57k on the clock, it is definitely a car show/once in a while driver. I didn't realize how rare the tan interior was until I started looking for some OEM parts and they came in every color except tan.

Good luck on scoring the white/tan 86, sounds like a great looking combo.

My 86 dominator didn't have many options. It has hooker long tube headers and the 140 mph speedo. One of the previous owners put a flowmaster catback on it. Here is a pic.

    Awesome Car!

Yours had the same options mine did! I've included a photo of it. Sold it back in the Early 90's. I had put a Edelbrock Torquer 2 intake, Holley 750cfm Double Pumper Carb and Ported Heads with Small Block Chevy Valves and a Ford Motorsport Cam in it by then. Ran Mid 12's in the quarter mile...

Good Luck on the Restoration.. Wish I could track down mine..

Besides the Hooker Longtubes for the 1986 Dominator GT, does anyone have anymore information about the mods on that year Dominator? I'd like to know as I'm curious about the matter.

I don't think anyone will ever know that. All the documentation got trashed when the dealership changed hands. And there are so few examples left to look at. My 86 was all stock engine wise. Just hooker supercomp long tubes. Supposedly you get get lower gears, but I'm not sure about being able to get engine mods on the 86+.

Just to add, from what I recall seeing as a kid at Summit Ford, you could get anything out of the motorsports Catelogue, be it gears, headers, h pipes, subframe connectors, different air breathers, cold air intakes on EFI cars, I THINK some cars may have gotten springs. Most all got 3.27/3.55/3.73 or 4.10 gears and the 140mpr motorsports speedo.

Most cars seemed to leave with headers, h pipe, cat back and gears.

A shame documentation was trashed for these rare cars. That is the same situation for the 85 mclaren coupes. Rumor is some received the B-303 cam. Well - that obviously is a non-emissions legal cam. It was never advertised when the cars were sold at the dealership(s) - for obvious reasons. Later - NO documentation was available for the 85's. Hell of a coincidence if you ask me (for both the dominators and the 85 mclaren coupes).... Since 86+ - cams, etc. did not function properly with the computer and chips and/or education on how to make it work weren't out then, so very little motor mods were done after 85 on most 5.0 engines - until much later when saleen 'kicked' in with motor mods when MASS air came out....

I think Summit Ford kept all the paper work, but they went out of business. And when they did they left the records for those cars which were subsequently destroyed. Darned shame to me, I remember seeing them new.

I think just about everything has been said. I do recall seeing a few 85 or 86 Dominator verts back in the early to mid 90's. I do remember back in 1990 a buddy was buying a new Escort and I went with him and I remember seeing about 6 or so new Dominators lined up side by side for sale.

I do have a 83 Dominator motor. I know it is cuz I helped yank it. She had the LT on it and that's about it on engine mods. Motor was all stock GT. D9 heads and all.

My parents had an 85 dominator back in 88. They had it in hastings nebraska and according to my dad it was pretty bad ass for the time and had NO problems burring the 140mph speedo. It had a functional hook scoop (holes on the lid and rubber to seal it), long tube headers, and thats about all i could get out of him. I really wish there was more info avalible on those cars.

the 86s got the b303 too...at least that's the story. Not sure if I remember an exact corroboration since I pay attention to the 85s...

oh and there's a good reason the 84/85 asc paperwork got trashed. Sandy supposedly went snooping around and the lady at asc shredded it all to spite him. Later after she got fired (for whatever) the guy who took her place handed the whole kit and kaboodle over to him...so that's why we have 86+ paperwork.

I believe you are correct that some of the 86s got them too, but they really did not run correctly. Seems to be a hit or miss senario. I think sandy may think his 86 has the B-303. No one really understood the ECU at the start of 86 and threw the B-303 in them as well. We did that ONE time and went through some HELL to get the the car to even idle correcltly. We then threw the stock cam back in the 86 and car ran MUCH better. The start of the speed density had no tuning ability that one was aware of. Later we all learned a few tricks, but hey - we are talking about the knowledge in 86-88. There wasn't much....

Yes, Sandy thinks his got it. He has always said that it never ran right even off the showroom floor.

I don't really know the answer, I have heard of a few people verifying the b303 in the 85s, but do not remember a verification of an 86. I also know some people definitely did not get the cam.

Few people tear down the motors to check. For some reason they just want to yank and toss them.
