how cloase do you want to be?

3821 Marhyde Bumper paint is supposed to be right...but I cannot find a can to try.

SEM Medium SMoke is really close. Duplicolor Dark Charcoal is really close. Even SEM Graphite interior paint is really close. None are perfect.

I just ran across these yesterday and wrote them down. Here you go:

SEM Dark Charcoal #39153
Marhyde 3821
Duplicolor dark charcoal bumper paint #FB-109

Search those above. In one of the threads that contained those, someone had a mixing formula for the paint shop guys. I neglected to write that one down. If you find it, post it back here.

All of these were purported to be very close to the original color with each being ever so slightly different. With the way most trim is faded, I don't see how anyone could tell. There were a few pictures of the results too.

I need to try the SEM dark charcoal but I was told it was too dark. I have the SEM sheet of colors and they all look the same.

I will keep trying cans until I run out of options or find one that matches my NOS parts.

BTW< the dark charcoal Duplicolor interior DYE is HORRIBLE. Far Far too light.

Thanks guys

I did punch in each of those #s separately, and came up with the same 1/2 dozen threads each time, but no mixing formulas

I think I'll be OK with something close, I'll see what's available around here

The info is scattered about here (FEP) though
It was difficult to find the info (too many results) until I just punched in those numbers only
Maybe I'll try and pull some together, copy and paste, and try a Rattle Can Color Guide thread

What about the LX cars? Isn't the trim actually black on those cars?

saleenjunky sent me some photos a while back of the parts he painted with the Marhyde. It looked nearly identical to the original NOS pieces he had.

maybe if he's around he can post up some photos.

If you get the paint code then goto a body supply shop, they can put it into a spray bomb that will allow you to do that.

Well the only thing I found was the Duplicolor
And it wasn't easy
The black bumper paint was common, not the charcoal

Boy they say "Cap is Color" and this cap don't look right ha ha ha
My trim must be so faded no wonder I couldn't tell what it used to be
I had to turn the can over and check the code stamped on there
If I get a chance today I'll spray some little pieces and check it out

Spray Bomb is another term used for Rattle can.

O.K. I was so annoyed I lost it I had to keep looking until I found it. I found some more information while as I at it. Can we gather the pertinent information and post it as a "sticky" in this section? Seems like a lot of folks need this information.

From earlier:
SEM Dark Charcoal #39153
Mar-hyde GRAY SATIN Automotive Trim Coating #3821
Duplicolor dark charcoal bumper paint #FB-109

I found the PPG/Ditzler code as #33717

From http://www.autocolorlibrary.com the 1985 FoMoCo Exterior Color Information lists it under BLACK OUT COLORS as a Flat Grey (Cougar, Thunderbird) #33717

Big A/Rogers FoMoCo 1985 Colors lists the color under LOWER BAND, PILLAR MIRRORS, WINDSHIELDS, BACKLIGHT MOULDING as Ford Code # 5889-H Dark Charcoal for Ford, Mercury, Thunderbird and Lincoln with a Foumula Number: 33876
(not to confuse things, but also listed was Dark Smoke Ford Code: 6108-G for Ford/Mercury with Formula Number: 34987)

The formula I was trying to find:
OK here is what I got right from PPG for mix # 33717

DMD649 CLEAR 231.5
DMD1683 BLACK 183.1
DMD614 BLUE 51.2
DMD1684 WHITE 43.2
DMD624 VIOLET 25.7
DMD622 RED 24.1
DBX1689 CLEAR 444.6

oddly it has the OEM color listed as 7Z.

Here's another formula from another thread:
Here's the formula for 33717 single stage. its based
on a quart can of mixed color. the manufacture is PPG.

code color parts

dmc902 black 226.6
dmc900 str. whi 215.8
dmc901 str. bla 137.5
dmc929 lt red 76.0
dmc904 blue 38.5
dx995 matt bas 421.9

additional notes:

mix 6 pts paint - 2 pts dt reducer - 1 pt dcx61
special low gloss color

this is the correct color for all body side molding and trim for
1986 mustang gt - charcoal.

More things to confuse:
In the Big A/Rogers listing of 1985 Colors, there was also a Dark Charcoal with a paint code of 1J and the Formula Number of 33875 available on Mercury and Thunderbird. I am going to assume this was the glossy lower Dark Charcoal paint treatment on the RS and two tone cars and not the satin finish trim color.

I found a place to ship it for $5 + 7.50 shipping. I may as well just order from there. I am in Plymouth Mass right now and will call this week and see if any body stocks ot in the NE area.

Would that satin black be the same for the trim and mouldings on my '83? I did a search and couldn't find any info on the color. Also, has anyone had any luck in repairing the door/body mouldings?

Got a Can of SEM CHARCOAL 39153 (the can did NOT say DARK CHARCOAL) bumper coating.

Its the closest one yet! I would definitely say that it is close enough that you can feel it is oem correct. It looked nearly exact to my NOS mirrors and maybe a tad off from the NOS side rubber mouldings. It was also very very close to the other metal trim that was painted ppg 3717. The ppg, mirrors and rubber side mouldings are all very close to one another but each one is off just a tad. This SEM Charcoal falls in there and would be fine I think.

I'm going to try the Marhyde as soon as I can just to try them all. I need to order it or convince the local supplier to sell it to me.

As per imevil1, if this is good for other years' trim I should include that in the top post
Would you have any info on that?

If anyone runs across any other colors/cross-ref/years, whatever, I'd like to include them there

The stuff I'm talking about is for 85-86 only. It may also be used on Cougars and Tbirds too that had grey (not black) trim.

All other years (79-84) get a Satin (semigloss) black. I would think nearly any Satin black would work OK.

Yeah, I can't stand the "extra sharp" cheddar cheese you get in the supermarkets. Its not much better than American cheese. Not that there's anything wrong with American cheese, its just that when I want Cheddar, I want it to BITE.

I bet that stuff was all super crumbly and stuff. Mmmmm.
