I assume you mean the bulge at the bottom of the bumper. Unfortunately Yes it is normal.

The rear wing and the tail lights are all stock Capri. The Capri is the "White Lightning" version of the Black Magic trim package.

Dear God will somebody please make a new 79-84 rear bumper? They have not stood the test of time well.

^^^^This needs to happen. It would also save a lot of nose swaps to the 85-86 also. It shouldn't be near this hard to find replacement body parts.

Wouldn't be too hard to reshape it. Surgical cuts and some glue. Hey - plastic surgery!

I never have done anything like that before would be afraid to mess it up and then being a$$ed out of a rear bumper. But you know what I should be and just do right.

I honestly have the same issue on my 79 PC,my 84 SVO, and on my 82 GT, so I will have to address the same issue once I get to that point on all 3 cars. I believe part of the reason for the bulge is the sagging that most of these rear bumpers have from the top surface down. The bumper has no support other than where it mounts to the Uni-body and the small flat surface directly under the tail lights. I believe if you support the bumper cover underneath to remove the sag that will remove most of the bulge at the lower corner to begin with. I plan on giving this a try and see how much this helps first.

If that doesn't help to remove the bulge entirely then my next though is to add some type of support or backing at the bottom edge of the bumper to help push the bottom edge away from the quarter panel, thus straightening the body side of the bumper cover and smoothing out or removing the bulge entirely. I would most likely have the support bolt to the same point that the bumper bolts to the Uni-body.

I hope to work on this in the near future on my 82 GT since I really need to get that car finished and out of the garage.

I really hope some day soon enough Daniel Carpenter will surprise us 4 Eye owners with good quality reproduction 79-84 and 85-86 rear bumper covers, and the complete body moldings for the 79-84 cars....

The rear bumper cover and the moldings were the reason why I decided to change my 83 vert to the 85/86 look... I´m just tired at looking at my 81 with shrunken moldings and warped rear bumper cover... I have bought several used ones, they are all warped, they are all shrunken...

I haven't ever had the rear cover off of my 79', is it possible to make a reinforcement of some sort in there? I have access to a full fab shop, so if an idea is brought up (shy of making a mold for a new cover entirely), I can probably make it happen.
