    Default Convertible Doors

While it may have been discussed a few times, here it is again and maybe easier to find. The 83-86 convertible doors have an added reinforcement. The ASC cars seem to use the same reinforcements. I have not inspected an 83 vert. But I would imaging these to be present. They are also present in the Ford Parts book.

    85 Asc, present
86, Ford vert, present (junk yard) photo attached
    92, Ford vert, not present

I will have to check my other cars and update this.

I suspect the 87-93 updated Ford vert. Doors did not require this reinforcement.

They are on the '84 (Capri) T-top doors I just picked up. Want a pic?

In my experience the 87-93 doors do not have the two black metal reinforcements that were on the IIRC late 82-86 T-top and 83-86 convertibles.

The 87-93 cars do have a large metal reinforcement plate that surrounds the speaker and gives additional support to the window motor. I have a pair at home in CO, but unfortunately don't have any pictures to post.

My 86 GT Vert does NOT have the vertical braces. There is also no speaker cut out @ the front of the door. There is a square cut out about 8" back from the front that is not used for anything. I assume it is an access hole but I could be wrong. Interestingly enough there is a round punch out on the door board that is still intact in the front speaker location.

My 88 ASC/Mclaren Mustang doesn't have the vertical braces either.

My understanding with the ASC cars is that they started with hard top cars and cut the roof off themselves. So that would explain why yours doesnt have the braces and probably doesnt have the plate around the speaker hole either.

I you read all the details, you would see this trend:
83 Ford Mustang vert, braces present
84 Ford Mustang vert. Braces present
85 Ford Mustang vert. Braces present
86 Ford Mustang vert. Braces present

84 Mercury Capri ASC vert. Not sure, only 50 cars built
85 Mercury Capri ASC vert. Should be present. Most cars were special ordered. Some were pulled from regular production and converted.
86 Mercury Capri ASC vert. Should be present. Most cars were special ordered. Some were pulled from regular production and converted

The 87-93 verts. Had reinforced doors and likely did not need braces. The ASC cars likely included vert doors on the special order.

PO's (Mustang Marty) pic of the bare door of my '85 ASC. No suggestions (based on the '84 T-Top doors that I recently bought) of braces ever being installed:

FWIW, ALL ASC Capri converts were specially equipped on the assembly line for shipment to ascMcLaren for conversion.

Your statement is not correct. You should do you homework before making a statement as such. Some 85/86 cars were not prepped with the ASC Spec package prior to being converted. Little in known about the specifics of theses cars other than a difference in the vin. ASC spec. Ordered cars had a vin which started as 1MH and regular production Capri cars had Vin starting with 1ME. It’s possible the regular production Capri converted cars for 85/86 did not get the bracing with the conversion.

The braces do have separate Ford part numbers so there is really no reason why they could not be installed on these few cars.
