Default Which type of car to choose

I am looking for a car to rebuild to my taste. My dilemma is what car to start from for a base. I am looking at 2 right now, those these might not be my final selection. I am partial to both.

    I am planning on
    • repainting to my favorite color - Orange
    • redo interior gray
    • full suspension upgrade - MM Motorsport maximum grip package
    • 5 lug conversion with disc brakes F/R
    • Axle Upgrade - 8.8 31 spline
    • motor - 363 Twin turbo (already have heads, intake, turbo kit)
    • 5-spd transmission upgrade
    • do not want a T-top, convertible or sunroof but want 4 eyes!

    1983 Capri
    • running in good shape $2000. Would hate to "destroy" this one
    • Could sell parts to recoup some money
    • does have some minor interior and motor issues, but driveable
    • Already have a 82 Capri RS, don't want to change that one.
    • Love the uniqueness of a Capri

    1979 Mustang Notchback
    • More rough
    • not running
    • Like the style
    • Cheap

My biggest choice is... do I spend some extra money then destroy a rare, running Capri or go with a non-running car and bring back to life.

Modifying a car is NOT destroying it! Follow your heart.

the Capri is so interesting and unique. Such a transitional body style 70s-80s (euro style) compared to the Notch which has a real 80s feel with no 70s (even though it dates to that time it was a modern style).

I would go with the Capri with a unique body style bubble back its very seldom seen on the road compare to the coupe. Follow your heart you can't go wrong with either one

Capri. You're not destroying anything until the sawsall comes out, and even then, if it's in a spot you can't see, still fine. I've personally never cared for notchbacks.

THE COUPE. stiffer overall and looks to be ready to build esp if you are considering putting real power under the hood.. no regrets with doing what you want based on the overall condition of that coupe.. a perfect project build starter.

You are a lot of money ahead if you start with a car that's all there. Even more if it runs. More still if runs well, goes in all directions, stops, and turns.

I had more parts sitting around than I care to think about and it still is costing me big time to turn my 1985GT roller back into a Mustang.

And that's not counting finishing off (well pretty much staring over) on the Saleen conversion someone started on it many moons ago. Finding and buying that stuff is another topic of conversation entirely..... Just think what made of unobtanium means, then think about what that type of stuff costs.

BTW - for anyone else who thinks they just might be crazy enough to also build a 4 eyed Saleen tribute car all I can say is get out your ATM card and get stacks of cash -- you're going to need it.

400 pounds is like 3 to 4 tenths in the 1/4. Just saying.....

No way there's 400 lbs. difference between the two cars if built with the same powertrain and features. I'd be surprised if it was 200 lbs. difference and it's all over the rear axle. I'd start with whichever one needs the least body work.

Doesn't seem like anything you're gonna do can't be un-done. Might as well go with the nicest 'base' you can afford.

As long as you don't do an LS swap I doubt you'll get much flak from this crowd for modding the Capri.
