Default Sun visors won't stay up

I'm sure this has been covered before, but how do I get my sagging sun visors to stay up?

There is as spring on the end of the sunvisor mount that is up inside the headliner.

If you remove the sunvisor and shim the spring with a washer or two that will often help with the visors not staying up. You can also look at replacing the spring with something a bit more stout.

The only other option and usually the one I employ is getting the hardware from either the later model 4 Eyes or the Aero cars and adding the center mount so the sunvisors don't just hang off the one end. Good Luck!

So, should the visor touch the roof? This is in a T-Top btw.

    Yes, . . . and no.

I believe when brand new the visors would touch the headliner, but most don't after just a bit of age on them. If the visor is falling down or hanging too low and causing you issues, then I would look at shimming the spring to help hold it up tighter to the roof. Good Luck!

I'm thinking it may be too loose on the rod, since it just slides over it. Is there a way to fix that?

Some people will sand the rod and/or add some type of tape, etc. to get the visor to hold better.

Hmmm, I'll have to figure something out. They're really annoying hanging down when you don't want them to.

I completely understand! One of the reasons why I do the conversion to the two mounting points on my cars as I sit tall in the saddle and the visors hanging down at all actually obstructs my view out the windshield!

I thought there was a piece of metal that you could squeeze with pliers to tighten the visor on the rod to keep it in place.

I had a can of 3M trim Adhesive and I blasted some inside the visor and then on the rod. I didn't let it tack up so it actually worked like a lubricant when I inserted the rod. Then, I taped the visors up over night. The first time I lowered the visors, it was pretty hard and they are still a little tough to move, but they stay up now!

Wedge a old style clipboard clip in the w/s trim to headliner gap and open clip, insert visor.
    not really

my ps is loose too. no luck shimming that spring yet

    ideas:
hidden magnets in headliner and on/in visor

Am going to try hd black Velcro this weekend (black interior).
It is available in other colors.

    Will do.
Was in Home Depot this morning trolling for more ideas.
Seen washer thickness and button style super magnets plus sticky back credit card magnets.
    Under 5 bucks.

Am going to check if a regular magnet will pick up the rod if held near it.
Or if one would goof up a gps.
Thinking thin but large dia super magnet inside the headliner if it does.
Nothing would show although no one can see anything on the back side when stowed anyway.
If they use the mirror, aint gonna notice velcro. Or will they ask?

Plan is to keep it proper fore/aft plus not drop down when stowed.

Also thought about those large clamp style paperclips in offices.
    Darn, had one here somewhere.

Not worried about when visor is in use (rare), just it staying put in the correct loc when stowed.
And foolproof for passengers to use without directions.

Question is if sticky back velcro will stay stuck to the visor in summer heat or cold temps.
If not, hot melt glue will be used, like factory did to visor mirror.

My Ranger has gray visors with the plastic clips. Work fine.
They are of diff finish foam backed material.
I did replace the Mustang headliner with that stuff.
but never seen this 'new' style visor in black.
So we keep and work with what we have even if no material match anymore.
They are not cheap nor wish to damage anything.

Strange the ds gets way more use but is not loose.

Some good ideas there! My problem is 1. I have a t-top and 2. the headliner is vinyl. I really want it the way it was manufactured, but I have to come up with something so I don't have to fight the visors while driving.

Mine would move fore and aft AND sag down. I bought two new repro rods and they don't move fore and aft anymore, but they still sag down 2 inches when driving-very annoying. I'm going to try to sand them a little and add some spray adhesive. One of these I'll break down and buy new visors and clips-I just don't feel like spending the money and something so nonsensical that Ford should have engineered better.

I believe you might find a lot of that area on a Non T Top and non Sunroof car is not solid metal above the headliner. There is some structure there but mostly it's empty holes. The T top and sunroof cars are solid metal all the way across in that area. I did what Wraith said a long time ago (mine has T tops) and got the clips and visors out of a 87-93 and screwed them in and haven't worried about it since. I certainly understand the desire to keeps things looking as they were made though. If there is a section of structure in the right place, your magnet idea sounds at a very minimum plausible. Let us know how that goes.

Lots of good ideas here. My sun visors are in great shape except for the sagging. It's weird because they are tight on the rod when trying to pull them off, but they sag.

Default sunvisor rod droop solved with magnets

Have to post details again to explain what happened.
A story of how it went down. More like a book chapter.
Cost: 3.99 per visor. Time: 1 hour (+ 2 to write this). 1 to read it.
Pics will follow when i have time, prob this weekend.

Went to HD this sunny warm morning.
Bought a 6 pack of regular black ceramic 1" thinnish disk magnets. 1.98
While taking a break in HD parking lot, sized up the visor project.

Got a surprise..magnets stuck to the visor in the rod area. Grrreat!
Visors are covered with the oe 1979 headliner material.
Wow. Nothing to glue or mod to the visor if using magnets.

    Reasoned was on to something.

Still parked at HD, pulled the w/s trim strip.
The headliner is the foam backed material from JoAnn Fabrics.
Made a 'magnet pocket' using finger to pry glued material from front of backer board. Good no rips.
Slipped a magnet between HL material and backer board. Did not hold visor.
Idea. Sandwich. One magnet on either side of headliner material. Added 2nd magnet to interior side.
Both magnets found each other. One under headliner fabric, one on the visor side.
Then moved visor into stowed position.
Darn. Regular magnets were too weak to hold up visor solid but they wanted to.

Determined may be close. Try more 'power'.

So went back in the store and purchased the 3pk of rare earth magnets, 6# pull. 3.98/pk
    http://www.homedepot.com/p/MASTER-MA...47HD/202526369

Back in car, made another magnet sammich using the premium Neodymium type.
Bingo. Visor was pulled up and held in correct stowed position.
Bonus: discovered the magnets also held the visor in the forward sunblock position.

    Slight problem (solved);
Magnets now pulled the headliner material down a little while they held up the visor weight.
Removed the visor. The inner magnet was strong enough to find the metal roof bracing thru the backer board!
If the hatchback metal header has holes, you would not know it.
However, reattaching the visor caused the inner magnet to loose grip on the metal. Visor weight pulled the liner/magnets down again.

So close. Where/how to fasten magnets to solid surface under headliner?
    Answer- they did it themselves.
Would have prob not found this out so soon if ever had it been a 2 pack of magnets.
    The 3 magnets work together.

First thought was hot melt glue the inner magnet to the backing board. This may solve the headliner drop glitch.
    Eh another day.
    Hmmm.
What if that 3rd leftover magnet in the pack would grab the metal brace if inserted between the brace and backer board?
Might as well try and use the leftover, or so i thought it was.
Then the 2nd middle magnet, between the backer board and headliner material would find it?
Then the 1st magnet, placed on the interior side of headliner in the open, find the 2nd and grab the visor?

    Answer: yes sir.
These magnets are strong enough to:
Hold the visor up in stowed and sunblock position.
Hold the unglued area of headliner in place as if it were still glued.
Hold a clip on garage door opener.
Vanity mirror is temp removed, plenty of pull avail for it too.

    A triple? deck sandwich.
'Bread': header roof brace, backer board, headliner, and visor.
    'Meat': Three Neodymium disk magnets.

Luck. The magnets were lined up with the visor rod when the visor was folded down.
Using 3 magnets also solved the headliner sag. The inner 2 are not visible.
The outermost one stays visible. Looks like a chrome button.
Visor use is normal. No confusion, directions, restrictions needed.

    No glue/reglue of anything.
Off the shelf parts, low cost, simple install, nothing to break.
Initial test when driving home- no movement of visor period. Up where we want it like new.

Placement of magnet stack is where visor is closest to roof when held up by hand.
Fore/aft loc of magnet stack is in line with rod when visor is folded down.
Side to side magnet stack is between rear mirror end of visor and where newer design visors have their clip.

I probably should have been more clear on what mine are doing. When I say sagging, I mean the visors won't stay in the up position. Sorry if I was unclear.

I bet magnets, in a more rearward location, will solve the flop down problem too.
More rearward location in the headliner. Same stack config. Insert from door trim side.
Possible visor will not flop down using the magnet position pictured.
Cannot verify that. Somehow both visor's rotation up and down has stayed tight on mine.

Problem is lack of metal in visor for the headliner magnets to grab.
The only magnetic attraction or metal is in the rod area.

Adding metal to the visor at any other location on visor would be needed to use magnets.
A cheap clip on mirror has metal clips that work. I tried it. They clip on any edge.
A small strip of metal, shaped like a U and crimped on, would be less noticeable. Paint to match visor.
Magnet not needed on visor, nor would it stay fastened on the fabric.

Some have used toothpicks, nails, to tighten up rod.
A similar one has to be cut open to see what is in there, like in a scrapyard.

A 20# pickup magnet, placed on the visor like a pushpin, does not work.

From what i read, glued velcro or similar eventually, if not immediately, peels off.
    Would need a wraparound type.
But the headliner material is not the greatest to fix a matching velcro fastener to.

Goal is to find anything that holds up visor, releases easy, least noticeable.
Magnets work. Found others have done this too, same magnets.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the solution for my issue would be. The visors feel tight when trying to pull them off the rod, but just won't stay in the up position.
