Well, I decided to dive into the front of the motor and top. The intake had a leak and I was going to rebuild the carb anyways.

Intake is very clean on the underside minus the front water ports.

I will be putting the egr plate back on to keep as much original items on the car.

Bolts all came out with a couple scary ones in the front. The 2 in the front have seen water and will need to be replaced. I'm not risking torquing a thinned bolt.

The one unfortunate thing that got damaged was the hard line to the pump. I ended up having to put it in a vise and apply 100ft/lbs to break it free. Someone must have been angry that day in tbe factory. The inlet nut got a few marks but is still fine to use again.

Original waterpump is toast as you can see. The original "ok" stamp still visible. It's NOT ok anymore...lol

Expanded view. Lots of little gaskets and clips to keep track of. When I assembled, there was a small short little tube that has two o-rings. I had to use the smaller of the 2 because it was too tight. Everything else went together nicely.

Here are some detailed stamping numbers on the carb. "P5" unfortunately rubbed off when cleaning.

Was looking at pics, just wondering what is the hole for next to flange. Looks like metal is cracked/broken. Nice job on the rebuild, I wouldn't know where to begin.

Intake is in. Cleaned up quite well with just a hot tank. Another good indicator of the low mileage. I did remove the dizzy to install it. I'll get the rad tomorrow and get the water pump and the rest of the plumbing done....Almost there.

Gave the egr some primer and a coat of Ford engine grey. Then I installed all appropriate gaskets and spacers.

New fuel line to carb installed along with new Motorcraft thermostat, and hoses. I went with a gates water pump as the Motorcraft one was unavailable from Rockauto.

Next I cleaned up the original spark plug wire boots and installed them in the correct fashion as new. Next thing I need to do is put some fresh oil in, gap new Motorcraft plugs, start it up and bleed the coolant.

Well, I found out that Holley carbs have a tendency to start leaking at the WELCH plugs after rebuilds. Mine was spraying out and hitting the ignition box

JB weld or epoxy is the usual fix or a replacement bowl. So I went down the JB weld path with great results. It did lead to a leak at the bowl fitting so I replaced the gasket that came with the rebuild kit with the original one. Then I added a small amount Teflon to the new hard line from the pump. Tightened it all up and not one leak.

This is one of the best running stock 302 motors I've ever had. Feels pretty good to finally show this car the care it has needed for a long time.

Her maiden voyage yesterday turned out to be a ****ty day of 1 step forward 3 steps back. Her idle jumped way up when driving causing me to hot brake my car on the way home. I'm hoping it was the secondary butterfly was sticking. But before I could find out, the heater core blew and left a mess in the heater box and some of the carpet. Most went on my new carpeted floor mats. So now I'm on the hunt for a heater core and will be adding the restrictor in as well...plus my cleaned, tested and painted rad is sweating on the sides.....
    @$#!

Today I took the rad back and it only leaks when it was heated. So she needs to be recored....dangitt! More money I need to spend. I got a new spectra heater today and was surprised it was in stock.

Since I have time to spare before I can get the car going again, I decided to give the tail lights a fresh spray of trim black. Much better!Name: 20200903_181551_HDR.jpg

    Looking good!

Did you get that standard Gates water pump or the High flow Gates?

My 82 didn't have that cool heat shield under the carb, that is neat.

I'm pretty sure it was the standard flow. I did put the restrictor in the feed line to the new heater core. It was only time before the core blew as it was not the original and someone put on a 7lb rad cap on the car not a 16.

Two days ago I got my re-cored radiator back and installed it. After some testing a a bit of burping she is leak free and working great! The little hiccup with the carburetor ended up being a sticky secondary. The other 2bbl was stuck open just enough raising the RPM and not closing. Took it to our local Wednesday cruise night yesterday with a lot of lookers.

It is such a satisfying feeling reviving Four Eyed Cars. Next on the list will be new single exhaust with a muffler with some proper rumble and a custom dual tip to look close to original.

Stinger supplier went out of business because of covid. I found a similar one on EBay. I'm hesitant on pulling the trigger.

Hello Blainer, it looks great. I hope you don’t sell this one, it’s too nice to sell to someone who will modify it.

Thanks Cougman! I was lucky when I sold my 82 GL that it wasn't altered too bad. The interest in untouched 4 eyes is starting to gain popularity up here in Canada. I did put a couple ads out just to see what kind of interest I'd get. I'm planning on doing a nice single exhaust with a custom dual tip to give her some rumble and that period look.
