Not much holding that transmission in, just the shifter, mount and driveshaft so you may as well pull it and clean it. You know you want to! Be a good time to check the U joints too.

I managed to get the rest of the chrome trim off the back and quarter windows. Also the interior door panels, chrome door window trim, dew wipes, and lock cylinders. I pulled back the wiring in the trunk as well because it is going to get prepped and a quick spray too. I then got 2/3 of it wiped down.
All that really remains are the door handles (which I'm not sure I want to pull due to not having a rivet gun) and the black rocker molding. I am very hesitant to take off the side moldings. I have seen the deformation of them from doing that and it makes me nervous I will f*** them up. One or two may have to come off due to small rust spots near them though.
Then I can really go to town with some sanding.

Parts are back home. No discount or deal it seems but at least they were quick. The K-member will need some cosmetic touch-ups. They weren't the neatest, prettiest welds. I'll do some chassis black on the control arms and then reassemble them at my leisure (haha that's funny). I think I will just primer/seal the bumpers and leave as is. That or they can be the HVLP test pieces
So much to do...the end of June is looking improbable at this rate.

I scrubbed and degreased as much as I could before I was going to start sanding. With the very small paint failures I have (other than the large obvious ones) it is very easy to lose track of them after the sander went over them. I ended up doing a close visual with a good light, circling them all with a sharpie and then removing the paint with a buffing wheel. Now I can deal with the teenie rust spots easier and then sand around them etc. The rear wheel wells will need a little more attention. One had three very small perforations. I do not have the luxury of replacing sheet metel or doing welding repairs (I know that is the preferred method) so I am looking at other options.

As quick as I would have put 2 more cylinders and a 3rd pedal in this thing, I like what you are doing to it.

You did get that car just in time. Another buyer probably would have just continued to drive it.

Who knows what the future holds for a motor upgrade. My son seems to like being different than the mainstream (chose to play the bass guitar rather than a guitar for example). He seems quite content and excited. Plus I hope this will garner some interest at some local show and shines when we do get it done. It doesn't look like I am going to get the T-5 into my '82 this year but I am already in search of and may have a line on an SROD bell housing for the 2.8L so when I do swap, I will have a stick shift for this
No kidding, it would have been in a junk yard within a year or two I bet. I'm glad we didn't just rebuild and put it on the road ourselves. We only paid $1000 for the car and with what we are putting into it we will have a pretty good quality driver for what we could have bought for comparable money. I hope we will see another 30 years out of it . In the future the underside needs to be addressed and get rid of the undercoating. Don't even suggest putting it on a rotisserie Travis, I already thought of that seeing as we are at that point but I don't have much of a life left as it is!
Nah, you have to save something to do to it later. I mean, if my 84 was in a garage, it would be getting to the point you are but I'm cutting myself off where I'm at! You still may want to pull those rocker moldings though as there may be some rust hiding under there. I'd pull that molding off too as I have seen some Mustangs rust underneath it.

Its only the rocker molding, the side moldings and the door handles left. I don't think I could take anything else off except glass
I know there is a fastener on the front of the rocker molding but is the rest just clipped on? I can't see any other fasteners upon first glance.
I bought a rivet gun and assorted rivets from FMR that is on its way so I will be drilling out the door handle rivets soon and removing them. The side moldings? I was worried about bending the metal to the point I wouldn't be able to straighten them properly to reuse them. But you are right, there are a couple of rust spots near or beside a couple so they at the least would have to come off. So what the heck; all or nothing.
From what I remember, the front is the only fastener. The rest of it should be white plastic clips.

I finally opened the gasket set I got the other day. I wasn't going to bother porting the intake manifold because we will eventually putting on the Offy but I think for the small effort it is I will do it. The ports on the head are already good enough
Got to like "pre-forming" of a couple of the gaskets in the set. Had to be careful flattening them out not to crack them.

I know there are better ways to get exact matching but we aren't building a race car.

I finished the port matching that I scribed out previously. Note to self; you do not need too aggressive of a bit for the aluminum. Now off for a steam clean.
http://s1337.photobucket.com/user/82...107be.jpg.html
I also got the additional water ports drilled for between where the exhaust valves are side by side. Note how I almost screwed it up and marked the wrong location on the left. When I laid them out with the gasket I had them mirror image not side by side. Good thing to measure twice and cut once. The first pilot hole I drilled made me nervous as it did not seem to enter the water passage. When I drilled the larger hole it entered it. The other three were easier.

I then took the time to tap and chamfer all of the metric holes. I didn't seem to have the right one for the spark plug holes. Any ideas what the pitch is off the top of their heads?

I saw some of my other parts at the shop looking pretty much ready to go together. Polished crankshaft and resized connecting rods.

In the whirlwind it was removing the engine, stripping everything off it and everything out of the engine compartment, I seriously needed to organize and clean a lot of stuff to eventually be ready for reinstallation. I bought some plastic bins awhile back to store everything in and I even detailed some more items after work this past week. Most aluminum parts have oily crud and/or oxidation which cleaned and scotch brighted up nicely. Nice that a little TLC will do so much. I made a nice dent in the pile

You keep it up, that Mustang will be too nice to drive and you'll have to buy your son a beater.

Well that is all off now. Side moldings off and all adhesive removed from the car (that took some elbow grease!). All that could come off now is glass- don't even go there (yet).

Good thing I took them off. There was hidden rust in a few spots, not just what I could see near the edges.

So the dash was broken and the passenger vent handle not attached (that's a poor mans air conditioning back in the day for you that weren't sure)

I cut and shaped some sheet metal and drilled the holes to match one existing screw for the HVAC and the two for the slide nut/retainer for the handle. I gave it a quick coat of paint, scuffed it up and then epoxied and clamped it in place to set.

An extra screw on the right would have been perfect but it looks like it adhered well and the angle of the actual pull does not appear to want to torque it off. We'll see how long it last like that at least.

Started out with almost three hours of bead blasting a lot of miscellaneous stuff. Maybe it will warm up enough I could paint something in the garage.

Got all of the speakers in and the wires ran properly down to where the radio will go. Just a little splicing to do later.

Wiped down and degreased where all of the moldings came off again and then started on the hood. I noticed it's got a couple of small issues other than a couple of layers of paint and some faint rusting. The underside is good and will only need some JB Weld to stick the crossmember back to the skin.

when I was 18 my buddys mom got a brand new 79 tangerine ghia. it had the wire wheel covers and had a white interior with a/c. it had a luggage rack on deck lid I think ? it was a freaky looking duder. we drove that car hard and it was actually pretty fast for non v8 power. I remember sheep skin covers as well. it had that textured white vinyl on the seats. that was in elpaso texas. so its trashed and crushed by now. border towns are notoriously hard on cars in my opinion. it also had that awful carriage roof option in white as well. what a freaky car. it stood out like a smashed thumb nail.
