    Default 79 Cobra exhaust

    Looking for any help with the exhaust system on the 2.3 turbo. Since I rescued mine with nothing but the exhaust manifold, my question is the exhaust run out into dual pipes for the factory setup. Also diameter of pipes and tail pipe end types. Any info will be appreciated. Dwight

    From factory, same setup as for 5.0 ... 2-1/4" single line with twin-tip tailpipe. The latter is pretty rare to find, and even if you find one, it may not be usable.

    The carb'd turbo versions had a crossover pipe that went for the passenger side to the driver side over the trans since the turbo was on the driver side. From the turbo it was a single pipe to the cat and back from there.

    Ok that makes sense now. The car had the crossover pipe from the manifold and turbo down below the engine. I had pulled an exhaust pipe and muffler from a 91 with a 2.3. Had to run a section from engine to the donut connector of the 91 exhaust to help meet requirements for State Patrol inspection. Now it is time to get serious and get it on the road.

    Got the new exhaust on and ran it into a dual tip.

    Here is something I learned. On Cobra's with the 2.47 rear gear did not get the twin chrome tip exhaust.

    I continue to be amazed by all the manufacturing variations on our four eyes. How in the world did the assembly line workers keep things as straight as they did.

    Having been a line worker, it was routine work for the most part.
    Look on the build sheet, read the part code(s) assigned to your workstation.
    Go get the part(s), install correctly per training. Wait for next car, repeat.
    Working efficiently is beneficial to all.
    Getting 'in the hole' (getting behind or not keeping pace with the line) is not.

    Repeat the same thing roughly every minute, hour after hour, day after day.
    No breaks, or walking around until it is time to per work schedule.
    No errors allowed unless its a QC problem or shortage of part(s), etc.
    Nowadays, random substance abuse testing is the norm too. Not back then.
    All part of the job and why the auto companies wages are decent.
    Pay low wages here and you have high worker turnover, qc problems, lower overall production.

    If rotating work stations, they tell you where to look for that station's code.
    Some line jobs install the same common part(s) on every car.
    That common part would not normally show up on the build sheet.
    Depending on the part and worker, some jobs required more than one installation operation per car.

    Every now and then you get a part code seen once a day or once a month.
    Whatever the build sheet code is, you put that part on and don't worry about it.

    You better get it right, else they have to send the car to the repair bay to correct the mistake.
    Most errors are caught and corrected before the car leaves the plant.
    Any workers involved may have some explaining to do.
    Later actions like TSB's and more serious recalls come into play.
    Never the less, things still get 'swept under the rug'.

    Nowadays everything is checked, tracked, bar coded, and logged.
    Manufacturers can and do accurately back track problems whenever necessary.
    These additional costs are passed on as part of the rising MSRP on window stickers.
