Default Let's look at 79-80 Armrests how they are different

The 1979-80 Mustang armrests are different from other Mustangs. This is important to know for a restoration.

Here is an example of how they are attached.

This is from a spare 79 Door Panel from a Ghia

They are attached the following way.

There is a screw at the top of the armrest.

A screw on the front bottom of the armrest.

Flip over the door panels and the arm rests are also held in by wire twists.

Here is a blue NOS armrest.

Note the armrests only come with screws not the wire twists.

I believe the clips for the bottom of the arm rests are just standard door panel clips as used on the older Mustangs. I can probably double check one of my books to verify the actual part number if needed.

I know I have some door panel clips from my 69 Mach 1 that look virtually identical and would most likely work if needed.

The 79-80 armrests are definitely different and I wish it was possible to get replacements as my PC needs a driver's side one.

Yep, it would be nice if they were reproduced EXACTLY like the way Ford made them.

I am working with NPD about getting these reproduced. This is why I posted this. Hopefully we can have it done. NPD is really cool and wants to help.

The wire twist should have a clip that hold the wire twist to bottom of arm rest. Have a couple of 79 door panels and arm rest in the stash somewhere. Will check them and try and get pictures. The arm rest are usable, just not pretty!

If you look at the bottom picture of the arm rest, there are the 2 rectangle depressions with the circle. The clips slide into those slots and then "pop" into the door panel. I will trample through the snow to my storage unit and pull out a clip and get a picture of it for you here in a bit.

Sounds great about NPD reproducing them. I looked into it a bit, but I am just not sure there is enough market there to make it cost effective. Hopefully I am wrong as it would be awesome to have options with the armrests.

That would be sweet! While mine are probably a 9 out of 10, I'd still like to have new ones or spares just in the event something goes wrong. With these being 34 years old, it's only a matter of time until they crumble.

I agree. They are also looking at doing the FORD emblem on the front Grill for 79-82 Mustangs, except Pace-Cars, and 82 GT. Try finding one of those bad boys NOS.

Hope all is going well with you Pete! Happy New Year to you and your family!

Ok, had a chance to grab one of my clips and take a few photos. I still need to do the research and verify what the exact OEM part number is and if they are truly the same as the clips that I have, but I am pretty sure these will work, since I am using them on my PC currently without any issues.
Sorry the pictures are a bit fuzzy, the camera doesn't want to focus well that close.

    David,

The reason why I put the Cobra snake emblem in the grille of my Cobra is because I couldn't find an NOS FORD emblem. I still have my original and with only 27,667 miles on it, it's still marked up so I didn't want to reuse it. I made a bracket that attaches to the grille with the factory push pins and I glued the Cobra to it. It would be great if they remanufacture those!

Happy New Year to you and your family as well!

    That sounds great!

The clips look identical to the one that I took pictures of. Unfortunately that digital camera is an older one that does the auto focus and doesn't seem to do well with small items up close.

Thanks for all the hard work David!

Those clips are readily available. As said above Ford used them a lot. I also dabble in early 66-77 Broncos and that clip was used to hold on the door panels and is available here
