Default How many Hatchback SSP cars are out there?

I've seen pictures of an 82 CHP hatch from a recent Knotts Berry Farm Ford Show. It has the typical black and white paint tweaked to fit a hatch body with tan cloth interior. I think there were 2 or 3 CHP hatches made that year. Does anyone know of other states or years in CHP for hatchbacks?

Only '82 (so CHP only) and it was 4 or 5, can't remember which.

    They weren't technically "SSP".

My dad knows quite a bit about the CHP cars. He thinks that there were 6 or 7 hatches(and he had the chance to buy the one that richstang saw pics of, it is also the only one known to exist), but the exact #s of the hatches are not known(the paper work that would tell the answer is probably long gone).

Thanks guys, I think some of the photos were from a Fotki album by the "Navymailman". The car owner had some paperwork on a display board but I can't read all of it. It notes it was a test car so perhaps that's why "FoxChassis" mentioned it was not technically a SSP car. I figured CA was the only state to have hatchbacks but I thought I'd ask anyway. If I find anything else on it I'll post it up. Thanks again!

This is something we might be able to have Marti Auto research. The only one I have seen (serial number 224464) has a special order DSO (720187). Marti Auto should be able to research that DSO and see how many "Body 16" (base hatchback) Mustangs were part of that order.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Mu...#CHP_Hatchback

    CHP Hatchback

Out of the initial batch of 405 units for the CHP, five were of the "hatchback" variety. These were produced under a Fleet DSO and retained for use and evaluation by the CHP. They are not Special Service Mustangs. One exists in private hands.
Now I don't know how accurate that Wiki entry is (5 hatchbacks). I also do not know the VINs of any of the other hatchbacks. I do know the VINs of all 400 of the coupes, and the three consecutive VINs immediately after the 400th coupe are P16F (base 5.0L hatchback).

    The 400 P10F coupes are 213038 through 213437.

The three P16F hatchbacks immediately following those 400 coupes are

    1FABP16F1CF213438
    1FABP16F3CF213439
    1FABP16FXCF213440

The hatchback I posted above is the last of four consecutive P16F VINs...

    1FABP16F7CF224461
    1FABP16F9CF224462
    1FABP16F0CF224463
    1FABP16F2CF224464

If someone were so inclined to run a Marti Report for some of those hatchbacks we might find something interesting...

My interest is just curiosity, I don't have any SSP cars in my driveway. I was thinking about building a 1/24 scale model of this CHP hatch because it is so unique.

I did a google image search and found this CHP car was recently for sale at the Russo & Steele Auction. Consignment # 41-4121. Since I'm not a registered user there, it would not list the date, location, or sale price. It did note the VIN 1FACP16F2CF224464. The write up states it was 1 of 6 hatchback 82 CHP cars built, however another photo posted elsewhere stated it was 1 of 5 built.

The image I posted above was from the owner before it went to and sold at auction. Don't know who owns it now.

That pic looks way too recent. Must be a recreation of an in-service pic. That link doesn't specifically say the pic posted is of it in service.

Thanks for posting up that side view picture. I haven't seen that one before. You probably already know this but, the white CA plate "82 CHP" is from the current owner. The blue plate is the past owner.

Thanks for posting a link to the following picture -

I hadn't seen that shot before. It's nice that the unit number is visible on the license plate (assuming that is an in-service shot).

I don't think it is. Wrong hubcaps and the e plate looks off. The whole pic looks too new, also.

What makes the hub caps wrong? The pic is of very good detail, you can't get that nice of a photo from scanning a photo(my scanned photos of the MT mustangs I posted on .NET werent this clear)

    Good questions, Sam.

Take a look at the picture here: http://www.specialservicemustang.net...CHP/82CHP3.jpg

It's a great shot of the correct caps. Our website also has a side-by-side comparison between the two here:

    http://www.specialservicemustang.net/wheels.html

The shiny, stainless versions are painted black as in the pics above (pinto). The pot metal, correct ones aren't. I have NOS versions of both.

As for the picture, take a look at any of the real in-service pics our on site. None from back then look anywhere near this good. What really gives it away, though, is the spotlight being in the raised position. Anyone who has ever worked out of a real police car knows what happens when the spot is left up at speed. Depending on how it's adjusted, it can actually swing back and break the windshield (even when they are pretty tight). Best case is that it swings back and scares the crap outta you.

    Hope this helps, bro.

From the look of that picture, those hatchbacks only patrolled the forest for speeders ...

The "in-service" pic is off a TV show. One of the members on specialservicemustang.net remembers seeing the same shot in a show.
Here is the same car at the Ripon CA. show in '06
