I came across a heat shield the seller said was off his '84 Anny. The part number he gave me was E4ZE S596AD. I'm having no luck figuring out if this is correct for '84 5.0L/T-5. Any help would be appreciated.

I see two types, I think the 83-84 was one type, then a revised 85. Sadly, I don't know which is which.

My guess is the extended one is the later one. JA Cook said that the intake manifold had some sensor revisions for 1984, and its possible that it spawned a revised heat shield.

Some pictures might help jog someones memories here.

Sure that the early one is the larger shield, not tapered or reduced in size.

For 1985, the passenger side, under the vac sec pot and choke, the heat shield back is chamfered, scolloped out, tapered back.

This is the later one from Marz post #10 on 08-02-2010, 07:08 AM

His is an 85 with just a different 34-6 metering block mod form an old 4150 that I had laying around. Its an 85 carb with smaller 85 heat shield, though.

Mustang Kid's 85 has the same chamfered, scolloped out, tapered back foot print on his 85.

    83 and 84 were bigger.

4eyes, I'm going to say that the E4ZE S596AD is probably right for your car. Below are pics of the shield on my 84-1/2 GT ... I believe this part to be original. These are the best pics that I have of it and I believe that between the two of them, I can make out E4ZE 9S596AE ... had to zoom way in to make these out. The part number is located at the rear of the shield, just before the upward bend. I guess since the one you are looking at has the AD revision, it must be a slightly earlier part. If it looks like mine in shape, I say get it.

It also appears that the shield includes a manufacturing date stamp on the passenger side. I read mine as 5 30 84.

I see that xctasy and I are working on this at the same time and have nothing else better to do on our respective sides of the globe than to obsess about some obscure part on these cars. Oh well, at least I'm not the only one ...

I think maybe the 85 Mustangs did get the E5TE (truck part). Below is one that I bought from a guy who said it came from a Mustang. And bmchugh above said that the one from his 85 is an E5TE. But I won't be adamant about it ... maybe someone else with an 85 can confirm. And I think that late 84 parts (like mine above) are close to the same basic shape as the E5TE, though I see a couple of minor differences.

    I read this part as E5TE 9S596AA with a manufacturing date of 2 14 85.

OK, almost done. I have one other spare part that a guy gave to me for free (he even hand delivered it for free!). I don't recall what year the car came from, but based on the part number, date, and shape, I'm going to say it is from an early 84. Note that the part number is in a different location, on a little jut on the driver's side that the other parts above do not have. Also, this one has been modified by someone at the front (top left in pic) ... probably to clear a different fuel line feed or something else for a non-stock carb. I read the stamps as E4ZE 9S596 AA and 9 08 83.

Hahaha, great to have an "international" conversation regarding a little piece of pot metal. Thanks xctasy and Saturn V for the in depth replies(pictures are always appreciated). Since my coupe came with an aftermarket carb and intake, I had no idea there was a heat shield installed from the factory. Was it to lower intake temps for performance or to minimize the chance of vapor lock?

My shield is numbered ... E4ZE 9S596 AE.

It also has a date stamp located on the passenger side ... 4 19 84.

Identical to post #31, Saturn V. It was on a 1984 GT Vert.

A while back, I bought a take-off '84 carb, along with the stock intake, EGR spacer, and all the plumbing
still intact. The heat shield also carries engineering number E4ZE-9S596-AE, but does not have the tab
sticking out on the driver side. It looks very similar to the one in post #32, except at the front, it only
has the one raised hump on the driver side, with the drop-down on the passenger side like the one in post
    #33.

The engineering number is stamped at the rear, between the bores and the kick-up. Date code is 4 4 84.
So chalk this up to vendor differences, I suppose.

The cut-out on the passenger-side front of the shield is for clearance to the ignition coil, which was mounted
in the same location on all of the carbureted GTs.

Thanks guys! I went ahead and pulled the trigger. I'll post pics once it arrive but looks like the one in post #31 with a single hump. The production date stamped on it is 11/83 and my car was produced in 12/83. With going all original, thought it was cool to find one that could've easily been installed at the factory.

    Default Heat Shield Received

Got my heat shield today. It's in better condition than I expected. It's an "AD" with a manufacturing date of 11/10/83, so could've originally been installed on my car when built on 12/1/83!!! Love that detail...

Looks great! Looks like my spare in post 33 above (except the front left corner of mine has been trimmed by someone).

Does anyone have one from an 83? Post pics.

Great photos... notice the minor differences in the "AA" version compared to "AD" stamped just months later? I always wonder what made the engineers decide on such changes.

    Thread back from the dead.

Just looked at the heat shield off of my 1983 Capri and it carries a part number of E3ZE AA 9S596. Date code is 8 5 82. Someone took a pair of cutters to mine somewhere along the line and made cuts for access to the EGR valve bolts.
