Did Ford install the heat shield under the carb in 83 with the return of the 4v, or was the shield added in 84/85?

I believe it did have one. Hang in, a lot of people smarter than me will clear ya up.

I've owned my '85 GT since '86.....I call THAT 4-eyed pride!
Yes the 83 4v had one.
It was revised for 1985.
Not sure if earlier cars had it as well.

i'll third that,mine's got it
here's to the freakin' weekend,I'll drink to that
The heat shield you are looking for is
E5TZ 9S596-A 83/89 V8 Carburetor Heat Shield
Older models had the following:
E0SZ 9A462-A 80/82 V8 Carburetor Heat Shield
You can use any 83,84, or 85 heat shield on your 83. Note that this heat shield is specific to 83-85 Mustangs and Capris. They were not used on any other vehicles, making it a pain in the neck to locate as many people have bent them to access various things (like idle jets), or they just tossed them during a carb swap.
Thanks for the good information. Jerry.
I took mine off...should In put it back on-changed to a edelbrock intake and a dual pump 670 street avenger carb?
Neither of those part numbers suggest they were originally engineered specifically for
a Mustang.

Jeff Cook

80-82 models have a Thunderbird heat shield.
The E5TZ part number for 83-85 models has no reference to any other vehicle as there is no "T" vehicle listed for 1985. There's not a T vehicle between 1980 and 1989 either.
I just did a search of the world's largest parts book for all Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury trucks and cars, and this part number is the only one and only applies to the Mustangs/Capri's.
Now, that doesn't mean a part wasn't superseded. We'll need to find someone with both a 1985 car and 1985 truck catalog set to make sure.
Where did you search? Who'd you call?
There are many parts that cross reference to truck's/vans. Everything from carbs to HVAC dash panels, emissions and steering column parts. Problem is, the part numbers seem to be reassigned so unles syou actually see the part you'll never know that the two part numbers reference the same part.

I know this is an old thread, but it still comes up in Bing/Google searches when looking for the right part here, so I just wanted to note:
E0SZ-9A462-A is a heat shield, but definitely not the under-carb one. I found one online (no pics), and when I got it, this is what it looks like:
So, for anyone looking for the heat shield that goes between the EGR spacer and the carb, don't use that number.

My 83 came with one, still have it in the attic somewhere.
Interested in getting rid of it? I'm building an engine for my '74 F-100 and using the carb setup from an '83-'85 four-eyed Mustang. I have the manifold, spacer, and carb, just not the heat shield.
