Ok, over a month since I got it into the garage. I've been chipping away at it here and there. Took a break for Carlisle, and need some time off for sickness. Anyway, here is the progress.

First pulled off the door and replaced the pins, bushings, and the hinges (bent). Note how the door now lines up as compared to the original pics.
    BEFORE #1:

    Now:

    BEFORE #2

    Now:

Bought a used fender and after I removed the lower bumper extension, I found a ton of rust....

Funny thing was that the back was mostly clean:

So I broke out the cut-off wheel, spot weld cutter, and welder and went to town (used part of the original fender). Here is the result:

This weld line will be filled, but it is also covered with the body side molding.

    Default Discovery phase

Using 60 grit on a jitter bug sander, I'm currently in what I like to call "discovery mode", where you get to find all the hidden treasurers of body men past. Here is the driver side basically stripped of 2 layers of paint:

Used chemical stripper on the hood to remove the old, cracked decal:

Final result of the stripping / sanding:

And a nice coat of high build primer:

That's all for now. Next up will be stripping the paint off the passender side, replacing the door pins/bushings on this door as well and then start smoothing out with plastic.

Nice work. I love do it yourselfers. So much satisfaction in doing it yourself.

Are you finding any previous body work? Thick places of body filler etc?

    RE: do-it-yourself, it's basically for 2 reasons:
1 - I'm too cheap to pay for a regular body shop to re-paint
2 - It's my hobby and I get a lot of satisfaction seeing what I can do with a turd.

Yes, I found previous body work primarily on the driver side. You can see plastic filler on the front edge of the door (known issue) and also on the driver side rear quarter above the rear tire. The driver fender is used, the one that was on the car was too screwed up at the rear edge to fix.

Passenger side came up basically clean

Ok, here is the latest update. I've been spending a few hours each night in the garage and I'm happy to report back that I'm done with discovery mode. Most of the car is down to bare metal or primer. For those of you who have never attempted this, be prepared for a mess (paint dust assuming you are sanding). Today was cleaning day, pulled the car out and here is the mess:

Car was full of dust from sanding:

So after a sweep up, I broke out the hose (can't stand a dirty garage):

Used compressed air and blew off the car (along with a rag):

Not much work required on the passenger side, just a few small spots of rust and the normal door dings (notice the red spots, left those so they are easier to find when I get back to this side to apply filler)

And finally back in the {clean} garage back up on jack stands:

Started working on the driver side door after the clean up, cut out the rusted metal, working on fabing up some patch panels. Stay tuned for more photos of the door repairs...

Very cool. I sprayed a 3/4 nose on a friends BMW last weekend and now i'm getting the itch to do some bodywork on my 85. Especially after crunching the bottom of the front bumper extension on my floor jack a few days ago. Do you paint in that garage? It looks way too clean. It really is satisfying doing body and paint work yourself. A crapload of work though.

Nice job! I'm probably going to have to have my SVO stripped to repaint it. Wish I had a garage to work on it in...

At least with wet sanding, it all drips down on the floor. The dust from dry sanding / stripping the car is (was) everywhere.

Yes, it's nice to surf FEP, but I like being in the garage....

Yes, I have my garage setup sort of like a paint booth with a high volume fan. I do a final clean up in the garage (to get rid of all the dirt / dust possible) and then wet the floor just prior to spraying.

It is a ton of work, but as you said - it's nice to stand back once it's all done and admire the work.

Thanks Eric. I had to strip this one since it already had a repaint over the original factory paint.

Stay tuned for more pics, spent some time this weekend welding up the driver side door....

Man, talk about a labor of love. Just looking at the pics I can tell there tons of man hours in there but I'm sure there's plenty more we can't see.

Joe - if you ever need rust free metal (i.e the fender) let me know. I can go to the local yards any day of the week and pick up just about any body part and know there's going to be zero rust.

Can't wait to see more, your build threads are always most impressive.

    Default Rust Update

Driver side door had some cancer so out came the cut-off wheel:

Another spot along the lower rear:

The frame was fubar'd up beyond some simple patches, so here is what's left over after all the cutting:

First up was to fab up some patch panels for the lower door frame:

And take care of the nooks and cranies (boy these are fun to weld up...):

Here is the frame completed. Used a string to make sure everything stayed straight and true:
