Dick Johnson is the ultimate legend in Australian Motor Racing History.
Multiple Bathurst Winner, Five times Australian Touring Car Champion.

Also first Australian to compete in U.S. NASCAR. 1989/90 Winston Cup, Seven races.

Probably best know for crying on live national television, during the telecast of the 1980 Bathurst Great Race, when as a privateer, after mortgaging his house to build a race car from an ex Police pursuit car, he hit a boulder and crashed out.

Apparently rolled on to the track by a couple of drunks.

The veiwing public were so moved, by the time the race was over, they pledged over $40,000 to rebuild the car which Edsel Ford (CEO of Ford Aust. at the time), then matched dollar for dollar.

    The rest is History.

    Enjoy the Video. Worth Watching.

Allan Moffat arrived in Australia in the mid sixties with his Lotus Cortina that Daddy's money had bought and couldn't work out why the locals were beating him. After all he was a Professional Racing Driver and they were part timers. He quickly became unliked with his attitude.
I was an Australian Automobile Racing Club member at the time (1963/1967) and also a Flag Marshall at Warwick Farm Circuit in Sydney and got to see and be part of what was basicly a tantrum thrown by a spoilt rich kid.
He went back to the U.S. a couple of years later.

Returns with the Mustang, with huge sponsorship from Ford and Coca Cola, and the same attitude. I'm a professional let me through.

Moving ahead. Australian Touring Car Championships.

    1988. Ford Sierra. Shell Sponsorship.
    1989. Ford Sierra Shell Sponsorship.
    Plus.
1995. Falcon EF Shell Sponsorship. John Bowe Driving.

Moving Ahead. 2008. Ford Withdraw Sponsorship Monies from Dick Johnson Racing. He almost goes bankrupt and comes close to shuting down His Team.

Today, V8 Supercars. Heading the 2010 Championship is James Courtney in a Falcon, driving for, you guessed it, Dick Johnson Racing.
without Ford money, and solidly beating the Ford Funded Teams.

If that does not make him the Ultimate Legend after staying Loyal to Ford for twenty three years, I will be as amazed as the fact Ford now want to do an about face and give him $500,000 in sponsorship.

For a Man that has achieved what he has with limited resources against Factory Funded Teams, there is no argument.

Chalkeysexplorer. Lets not talk about polarisers!

Must go as the next round of the V8 Supercar Championship is being held next weekend ten minutes walk from my home.
    Cheers from Australia

I remember my first trip there in 85 watching the race at Bathurst. There is one spot on the track where the cars come over the top of a hill and make an immediate right and left. They sometimes get airborne. There is hardly any racing anywhere on this planet that is better to watch than Bathurst. I have 1 or 2 posters of the 85 Dick Johnson car that I will probably never part with.

all good info... but if dick johnson was a good driver then he would have had the big sponsors. and just because his team now is doing good does not make dick johnson a good driver, he aint driving now.... and your forgeting that its all great ford teams/drivers as long as they won/win thats all that matters to me and many others. the history is all good. its just like bill elliott here in the 80's a single car built in the familly garages and a small familly team and they kicked some factory ass!

[QUOTE=Ausfox;1037127]Dick Johnson is the ultimate legend in Australian Motor Racing History.

I don't remember saying anything about a better driver!!!

Though Dick Johnson probably was. My origional point, for what he achieved with what he had, he deserves the Ultimate Legend status.

However having seen Moffat race at Warwick Farm, Oran Park, Catilina Park, Amaroo, Calder, Sandown Park. Lakeside, Surfers Paradise and Bathurst probably over thirty times in the sixties and seventies, I would dispute your assertion.

Moffat allways had the better car but was not allways the better driver.

Given equal equipment, for example the Controversal Falcon 1-2 finish at Bathurst 1977, when on the last lap Colin Bond in the other factory team car, who had been kept behind Moffat through out the day, was told not to pass Moffat for the win.
Ford could not let it be seen that Moffat could be beaten.

Colin Bond, Australian Touring Car Champion, Multiple Bathurst Winner, Multiple Australian Rally Champion, various Rallycross, Sports Sedan and Open wheeler Titles, was by far a Better Driver than Moffat and to add, like Dick Johnson, a much better person.

Only happy to keep those interested, informed on the results of this Auction. July 25th.

    Cheers from Australia

    Cool FOUREYE AT BATHURST VIDEO

Dick Johnson's Greenstuff Mustang failed to sell at Auction on the weekend, being passed in at $190,000, (US$175.000).

There's still hope for me yet, all I need is for all of you guys to donate to a buying fund or for me to win the lottery.

Meanwhile some interesting video of the Mustang at Bathurst in 1985.

Wow, thanks for the update. I have some video's of this car on track.

It looks like an amazing car for the track or someone's collection (read that as museum). LOL
