I have a 1980 fairmont wagon. Originally a 255/c4 car. I am putting in a 302/aod. What do I do about a trans crossmember?
Stock moved back?
Double hump?
From what I understand I need to have the member further back.

Would this work?

Would it be back far enough?
Apparently it worked for him.

Interesting. I'll have to remember that when I do my '80 Fairmont wagon.

Reinventing the wheel since...
Cantilevering the trans crossmember with a couple of 'end link bolts' is not a solution.
Get a grinder and a welder, grind off that old bracket, weld on the new one.
Yeah, I dunno. I suppose it works, but it's pretty redneck. Mounted in single shear like
that, those bolts are gonna flex. There's a fair bit of weight on that crossmember to
be supporting with a 3/8" bolt in single shear.
I'm with Mike. If you're running an AOD, it's much better to weld on the right brackets.

What I did years ago on my first Fairmont wagon was I made a perch off the back of the original trans crossmember. Once I got it lined up right, I welded it in place and then braced it. It held up longer than the rest of the car.
