    Default 302 start up problems

I finally got my 302/5-speed to fire, but it's running kinda rough. I have an '84 HO 302 with '89 302 heads and i'm curious if the timing has to be adjusted for whatever reason for the smaller combustion chambers?

I'm running an edelbrock 650 cfm with both mixture screws turned out two turns and it's idling just under 2000rpm and the choke doesn't seem to be working.

I set the engine at 10 degress below TDC and it will fire right up, but like I said idles really high and I also have a nasty tick.

Rockers torqued to 22 ft lbs, you think I need them tighter??

It will not do any good to torque the rockers more than the 22fp.
I think you mean you set the timing @ 10* Before top dead center , recheck and make sure , as you can only really set it with the engine idling @ 600 RPM or less, vac. advance line disconnected and plugged.

Yes, I meant 10* below top dead center. When I said I set it there I meant I rotated the engine by hand on the compression stroke until 10 BTDC and made sure the rotor was pointed at number one. I have not checked it with my timing light when it's running yet because for one it's running too high and for two it's clattering.

I don't think it's getting oil to the top of the engine yet, I put in a new oil pump and yes...the oil pump shaft was installed :P
