    Default 86 Fuel Sending Unit

Has any of you had any luck with the reproduction Taiwan-made sending unit from Mustangs Unlimited? I'm trying to find a sending unit that's good, preferably new and NOS one's don't seem to be available. The two used one's I've acquired from various sources have both ended up being no good. Can someone point me in the right direction. I really want to know what my fuel level is

I don't think there is a reproduction available.
Someone did post about sending your sender out to a company that repairs them.
About your only option vs. finding a used or NOS one.

MOST non-working sending units just have their contacts worn away. There are a few articles on how to repair that.

I tried googling quick but didn't find it.

    Default Rebuilders

There are a number of rebuilders listed in Hemmings. I disassembled the old one I removed and there is just a wiper and a small circuit board. Either the wiper wears out or the lines on the circuit board wear thru. If I recall correctly, they just snap in place and of course sold 1 wire on. I would imagine the parts would be similar on other models.

I just bought a used one, took it apart and the strip contact seems worn out at the low level side, I'll give S.U.R.&R. a call and see if they can help.

Just got off the phone with S.U.R.&R. and they say no problem send it in, it will come out to around $129 once is all done, return shipping and all, I'm sending mine in.....
and the OP, I recommend you do the same with one of your used units, 'cause it seems like there's no other option right now.
    good luck

I live 10 minutes from S.U.R&R. Last week I had them rework my 78 Fairmont sending unit that sat in a rusted out tank for 14 years. Took only a couple days and looks good, 1 year warranty. $116.09

Awesome. I've heard great things about S.U.R.&R. That's a great deal for a rebuild in my opinion. Most NOS ones go for $180-$300.

If you can find aftermarket ones (in this case you can't) they run between $80 and $130 for any vehicle.

    Thumbs up I'ts finally back!!!!!!!!!!

Well after exactly a month later after sending my Fuel Level Sending Unit out to S.U.R.& R, it's finally back, I must say it wasn't easy... but I'm just glad it's back.. and fixed!.
....They did give me a discount for taking longer than promissed.
Just need to hook it it up and test it I guess.
....and to the OP, I'm sorry for the thread jack.
Here are some shots of it...........

Looks like a very nice job! I know it took a while but definitely better than waiting forever for a new one.

Yeah, he did say that he had to use a whole new assembly because parts for this senders are virtually non existent, specially the circuit board...hence the delay, I asked if they would be able to do more of them and he reasured me that he could, they also sent a new gasket and ring with it which I thought it was cool.

Very cool. Perhaps someone here should do a "group buy" for this and get dozens of them re-done at the same time.

Also...FYI, Mustangs Unlimited is supposed to be getting a new shipment of this units around the middle of April, somewhere around 500pcs they say, I placed an order just before I refurbished the old one and they locked me in for one, I don't want to mislead anyone, but it may be worth trying if you must have one like I did, ...they say that they'll be shipped out in the order they were recived, so give them a call and place your order before they disapear again God know for how long.

The reason I started this thread is because of Mustangs Unlimited's inability to confirm to Matt at Foxresto, whether the sending unit they have listed for our 86 V8 cars, which comes from Taiwan, actually works. Matt told me he spoke to the man personally responsible for ordering parts at Mustangs Unlimited and the aforementioned information is what Matt relayed to me.

Honestly, I don't know how much I would trust these units if the supplier can't even confirm they work. Especially since, the sending units for the 86 V8 cars were a 1-year only part and the one listed on Mustang's Unlimited lists it for 83-86 V8 cars. For the price theWizard paid to have his rebuilt, I would just go ahead with what I know is going to work.

Judging by your profile you drive an '81....I'm not sure, but they probably use a different type of sender.

In any case, a link is always helpful.

    Talking

Well it's off to the shop early tomorrow to get the Fuel level sending unit, new Walbro fuel pump and new Motorcraft fuel filter replaced.

Can't wait to see that gas needle point where it's supposed to.
