    What you are doing with your son is awesome! I have memories of my dad and my self working cars, bikes and what ever else we could work on. I am looking forward to seeing more progress.

    Do you have any experience with this cam? It's still a slider style but it he (we don't have the budget for a full roller as of yet and we didn't want to just go with a ranger roller just because they're available as they're not really for a turbo motor. Here is the link to the cam specs. On paper it looks to be a pretty good match.

    no,I have none.This is why I asked...not to be sarcastic. I am gathering parts for a turbo motor,and am using the Ranger Roller. But now keep hearing how people dont like it in their turbo motors. I like the aspect of the roller followers,but as I already have it,I will run it.I figure I can always upgrade later...

    I didn't think you were being sarcastic. Sorry if it came across like that. I was only asking if you had any experience with this cam because this is my first dealings with a 4 cylinder, let alone turbo charging, I know next to nothing about 4 bangers. If folks have experiences good or bad on parts and builds I want (need) input. Hopefully it will keep us from wasting money and doing something counterproductive. I've only dealt with v-8s in the past. This is just as much a learning curve for me as it is for my son, although I don't want him to know that dad doesn't know anything about 4 cylinders. You know, got to keep my edge over him as long as I can, he'll be smarter, bigger and better than me soon enough. While he's still 12 I can pull of the scam that dad knows all and sees all. I must admit I think he's already starting to notice dad doesn't know everything. I had to consult my chiltons/haynes manuals on how to remove the cam/valves/valve springs on the 4 cylinder. Had the tool just not the knowledge.

    is the 10% rule... you just need to know 10% more and you'll look like a genius! I understand, though. And if he applies himself,watchout!

    As for the 4 cyl stuff,I installed a FI,N/A, Dual plug into my 86 trying to get some high MPG, and I have a 2.3 in my Ranger, so I've tinkered with them a little. My turbo motor was originally for the Ranger, but it might just find its way into the 86 Stang. I've yet to decide.

    Right now I'm not sure I know 10% more than he does. Sometimes I think he's too smart for his own good at the ripe old age of 12.

    Well, we've made more progress on my son's car. The engine has been rebuilt with a .30 over bore, forged pistons from Stinger, ported E-6 manifold, gutted and ported square bore intake, a 65mm TB, a performance cam (still a slider at this point, we'll upgrade to a roller set-up later), and we mildly ported the head. We've also switched to a serpentine drive system. Here are some pics. I haven't updated this in a while. A couple of before pics to begin with.

    This is what it's all about. Congrats to both of you.
    I can't get my son to check the oil, let alone step one foot in the garage. Some days I'm not sure if he knows where the gas goes. Enjoy the time together, not all of us have that.
    Get him registered on here, and get him started. Keep up the good work.

    I am so Jealous! I have a soon to be twelve year old son. I need to build the extra garage on the side of the house before we can get started on a project like that. I have the thumbs up from the wife for the garage but need to cut down a couple hundred year old Black Oak tree. Just can't get the courage to remove the old tree. Just too beautiful. Enjoy the time with your son, he will look back in 15-20 years and realize all that you have taught him.

    I'm in the military so we move about every 2-3 years. This time we (he and I decided) that know matter what we were going to have his car ready to run by the time we left here. He bought it in 2009 when we got here, we leave in about 8 months. The car will be running long before then but we'll still have to ship it across to Florida along with my mustang. We can't drive all of our cars across. He turns 14 in April this year so the plan is to do the paint and and finish the interior while we are in FL to have it ready to go when he turns 16. So far we are on track.

    My dad did this with me so I'm glad I get to pass it on. If you can work out the space I'd get started as soon as possible with your son, before other interests get in the way, especially if the wife is fully supportive (that's is very important).

    Good to see you two making progress! But you may be wishing you had put the water pipes on before you dropped the motor in. Mine were a PITA to do with the motor on the stand.

    Have you decided on a down pipe and exhaust yet?
    If you blink at the end of the straight away you'll miss the twisties and what fun would that be!

    We're going to use braided steel lines for the water lines. The ones that were on the motor when he bought it were rusted out too badly and hardline replacements were not in the budget (yet). Maybe in the future we'll buy new hard lines. We plan on using a 3 inch down-pipe and a single 3 inch exhaust w/o a cat all the way back. Probably use a flowmaster as well. We'll probably purchase the exhaust from Stinger (eventually).

    I have a 84 GT Turbo that I am working on with my 12 yo son also. Was my first car that I ever built. Its a convertible and I would love to restore it with him. Engine runs great and I want that same thing (my father was not into cars at all) that you two are having.

    Someday, they will both look back and appreicate the lessons taught, mechanical and otherwise that are had .

    Great photos and great bonding. I remember the days like this with my dad. They are forever etched in my mind and I am sitting here thinking back. Growing up the son of a wrench turner, sometimes working on the cars felt like a chore, other times it was total fun, but twenty years later I realize how important moments like this are as they do really teach some important life lessons. Thanks for sharing.

    A convertible, that's awesome. He had the chance to buy a convertible as well but I steered him away from it for his first car. They can be a bear expense wise when it comes to restoration. My Mustang is an 83 vert and it gets expensive sometimes. I'd love to see some pics of your project. Have fun working on it with him.
