Default Progress on 84 GT Turbo

We finally got started on my son's 84 GT Turbo. He's twelve and bought this car with his own money from another member here on the board. We also had some help with the pick-up and delivery. So we've pulled the motor and have got it torn down. It had a rod knock when we bought it. Pulled it apart and #1 rod bearing was shot. We need to have the crank turned and polished. Anyway here are some pics of us working on it together. This is a learning experience for the both of us. This is my first turbo car (my '83 vert is a v and he's learning all about tools and cars at the same time. Our goal is to have it running by summer. He's paying for most of the work himself (well he gets an allowance from me so you know) but, mom doesn't complain too much when I buy parts now because I can say it's for his car. We're having a great time so far. Enjoy the pics.

It's an original Turbo GT but someone has done some upgrades in the past. They put on an oil/water cooled turbo and E6 manifold. We're going to rebuild the motor after I get the crank fixed and put on one of Stinger's FMICs. We've already bought a '95 Cobra TB and I've got a '86 SVO upper/lower intake with gutted upper and knife-edged/ported lower. We're also going to put in a '86 SVO cam/head. All the SVO stuff my brother gave to us and I bought the TB. We want performance on a budget but not too much as this is his first car and he's only 12 now, so we've got time to add performance over the next few years. In addition we've already got 5-lug spindle (94/95) to do a 5-lug swap. We've got to get a 5-lug rear for it. We're working on it slow but sure.

Couple things: those hands are NOT dirty enough! Take pics when he opens the tranny an rear-end. An I hope you space out the work for at least a few years. Otherwise it'd suck being done but he can't drive it!

Awesome project. Glad to see he's taking an interest in it himself. I keep trying to get my little brother interested, but he doesn't want to do anything but play video games. Ah well, someday he'll learn.

Cool to see another father/son project. I can't stress enough how my dad being around and getting me involved in mechanics has positively impacted my life. I am an A&P aircraft mechanic now, all because he got me into cars and working on stuff.

Remember these days, cherish them. If you need anything, let me know. I have an 84 GT Turbo that most of the stock stuff (and a lot of not so stock stuff) has been removed from for upgraded parts. I may be able to help.

My first project was a 1979 L coupe with my Dad. Take pictures of everything!!! Those hours in the garage are some of my most cherished memories.

Well, we've made some more progress on my son's 84 GT Turbo. We've got the engine completely torn down and the block has been sent to the machine shop. We had to replace the crank and the #1 rod journal was chewed up too much to repair. We're also going to have bore the block 30 over. We've got the head torn down as well and will be starting some porting/polishing work on it. Here are the pics of him tearing down the head. I showed him how to do it on the first valve and he did the rest, well I fished the valve retainers out while he used the spring compressor. He's learning though and enjoying it so far. Any way, enough talk here are some pics.

Nice progress guys! keep the pics coming, we need as many of these builds documented as possible. Also as a heads up you might have to drill one hole in the head for the late modle intake manifold.
If you blink at the end of the straight away you'll miss the twisties and what fun would that be!

Yeah, luckily the head that we have the hole is already there. I'm not sure if it's a TC or later model SVO head. The car also had a TC/SVO style intercooler on it. As well the turbo is oil and water cooled. Someone at sometime in the past did some upgrades.

We've already bought a complete serpentine setup to replace the v-groove pullies. In addition we bought a Crane camshaft # H-272-2 to replace the stock cam. Some day we'll go full roller but that's not in the budget yet. So far he's bought and paid for most everything himself. I want to him to appreciate the value of a dollar and from what I've learned (when my dad taught me) is that you'll love your car more if you pay for it and build it yourself, instead if mom/dad just buy you one straight out. I'll have to pay for the new pistons for him as that's a little out of his budget, but I never intended for him to pay for everything himself or he would never get finished and loose interest. We'll post more pics when we get the block back and start putting the engine back together.

Here is the camshaft specs link -
