    Default Non Mustang starter question

O.k. here goes. I just want to confirm my suspicions on this one.

1997 Explorer with the 4 liter. Turn the key and all you hear is a click. Battery is new (Less than a month old), connections have been redone and cables were fine. Started good one time then about a couple hours later nothing but a click.

Put cables on and tried to start, nothing but a click from the solenoid. All lights and stuff inside work fine. I tried jumping the solenoid and all i hear is the same click, no starter movement, just clicking like it is getting juice but no start. Starters gone out right? Solenoid should be fine since its getting plenty of juice and no go. Can anbody correct me on this?

Remove the starter, CLEAN the mating surface of the bell housing, and the starter, and try again. Also check that the ground cable has a CLEAN contact where it grounds.

i wouldn't reinstall it, i would bench test it with a set of jumper cables before going through the effort of putting a potentially broken part back in the vehicle.

    what is your battery voltage?

have someone attempt to crank, and check the voltage going to the starter to see if you are actually getting anything there before turning any bolts.

spending money on things that don't need to be replaced sucks.
