    Default Summit Ford Racing Team

Seems Summit Ford also was a sponsor on Jim Crawford's Can Am and Indy cars in 1984.

    Jim Crawford Wiki

This was from an article about the 84 GT350 Dominators where they talked about Summit's Racing Program. The #68 was the car Jim Crawford used for his Rookie Qualification at Indy in 1984.

Found a Youtube video of the 1984 Can Am Riverside Race from ESPN About midway through the interview Jim Crawford and you can see the Summit Ford Logo right behind him!

Got a chance over the weekend to meet with one of the former employees of Summit Ford who also got the wonderful experience of helping out with Jim Crawford's race team! Thank so much John for sharing your collection with me!

Seems the Summit Logo got to make a few passes around Indy!

Here is a Cool Racing team patch!

    Default Summit Ford Indy car

The car above is actually a 1983 Theodore Indy car chassis number MN019. It was raced by Jim Crawford in his rookie year (1984) with Summit Ford sponsorship of the Ed Wachs Motorsport team. He had two cars - the 68 was set up for ovals and the 78 was set up for short tracks. The last time the 68 was out on a circuit was in 1984 in qualifying for the Indy 500 where Crawford was a DNQ and the last time the 68 was out on the track was in Meadowlands in July 1984. Crawford did bring home #78 in 4th place at the 1984 Long Beach GP which wasn't a bad effort given that everyone else had either 1984 March or Lola's and his car was well over a year old.

The cars are still around. #68 is up in the Mallya Collection in Sausalito, CA in the 'as-raced' condition it was in when it came off the track at Meadowlands in 1984 complete with Summit Racing sponsorship and United Breweries colors. Just Google Images of Theodore Indy Car for more of its pics.

I purchased #68 back in late 2010 and am slowly bringing it back into track-ready condition although it will be returned to its original Texaco Star #5 livery from when it was raced during 1983 by Tom Sneva in the Bignotti Cotter team before it was sold to Ed Wachs Motorsport.

The Jim Crawford Can-Am car that they sponsored is owned by someone in the Reno, NV area as far as I can tell. They have restored it and it is now painted red. I've seen it on EBay once or twice in the past several months and it had some of the original Black Dog Scotch Whisky United Breweries photos in the listing. As far as I could tell, it looked like a March Formula chassis converted over to Can Am.

Thanks for posting these pics, it was nice to find them online and a useful resource as I continue to build up the history of the Theodore Indy cars.

Here's the link to the website of Crawford's March 847 Canam car in the top picture. The car is in South Lake Tahoe, not Reno. It is indeed a March 82C Indy car under that Can-Am bodywork!
