    Default Phoenix area junkyard reports

Since it is junkyard season here in AZ, I figured a junkyard report thread might be of use.

We could state which yard we went to (which location, if necessary, since there are, for example, multiple Ecology yards and all that), the date, and what sorts of vehicles of interest were there, Foxes and any related donor vehicles of use.

My most recent one is a bit stale, two days old, but:

    11-7-09
Ecology 3250 W. Broadway Rd., Phoenix
Cars: 1985 Mustang GT, very little grey interior left, minor body damage, block still present, but upper end removed
1986 Mustang GT convertible, next to nothing left
1985 Mustang LX 3.8, mostly intact
Turbo Diesel MkVII, very much mostly intact

    According to Ecology's website:

HALF OFF SALE! FOR A LIMITED TIME
    ONLY AT PHOENIX LOCATIONS!

    Broadway Road Location!
    Mondays & Wednesdays
    27th Avenue Location!
    Tuesdays & Thursdays

I was just there. Found that T/D odd myself. Was the 3.8 the one that was next to the Lincoln? I was looking at the cool seats the Lincoln has. I was going to pull the HVAC controls but the back side was busted already.

The one with most of the grey interior missing has some decent body moldings I would love to have. If someone could find out how much they charge on half price day I could paypal the money and come pick them up on a weekend.

I need to get the pics up that I took from my day there.

About the side moldings, the problem is with 85-86 moldings, they're often pretty much trashed when they've been removed. It's very hard to remove them without warping them essentially beyond repair. Not only that, but most folks aren't able to get over there on half-off days. Weekends are the only time we can make it, unless something really off the wall happens.

I need to get back over to Phoenix. I was only able to hit up a couple yards last time. Need to find a grey center console in good condition for my 86. If anyone sees one let me know. I'll take a vacation day if I have to.

I haven't tried this but I have *heard* that, in order to re-use a side moulding, you can pull the steel insert (the part that gets all warped) out of the backside of the moulding before reattaching it to the car. Might help to lay it out on a sunny day, too, or heat it in your (non-food use) oven at about 180F. Extra points for using your significant other's non-stick cookie sheet.

On the 85-86 stuff, it's not the metal that's the problem, it's the molding material itself on the very thin edges, it gets warped and wavy. Not only that, but when you remove the metal backing, the stuff shrinks overall. Many times on 85-86 cars (including mine), you'll see where the molding has shrunk over time on the door.

79-84 stuff is a different material AND it's thicker on the edges, not thinner like the 85-86s, so it lends itself well to restoration. Hissing Cobra wrote a tech article on how to do that. Doing the 85-86 molding is whole different ball game than 79-84. I think FMR does a restoration service where they can get the 85-86 molding to look like new.

Haven't been on in a while.. neat idea for a thread.
I went out junkyarding for the first time in a long time last weekend. Saw some of the usual dime-a-dozen Foxes.. and an 83 convertible with black interior. Most of the desirable stuff was trashed or missing, including the rear interior quarter panels and seatbelts. I did score a nice center console from it tho. i also spotted an Escort EXP 5-speed. Looked pretty complete. I think it was at the U-Pull-it (or whatever it's called.. I forget) across the street from the Ecology down on Broadway in south Phoenix.
    Marc aka tripice351. 84.5 GT-350 2.3T.. and now, 1982 GL coupe.

Still there and sill pretty complete. I was there today and the convert is done for interior. They do have an 85 LX that was repainted a wierd blue. Door panels and dash hull looked really good considering. They were full power door in grey. I would snag them but I have manual locks. The center console was nice except the melted spot on the passenger side under the arm rest.

Ecology has a few aero mustangs but they were either missing motors or 2.3. They did have a tan on tan lx aero that I thought looked good color wise. Was thrashed by the time I saw it but I bet it looked good new. They did have a pair of early 80's 4I. One looked 83-84 ish and one looked just like my old 81. no 85-86 at ecology on broadway.

Also if anyone see's ANY Capri's for sale or parting PLEASE let me know. I'm looking to get my hands on every Capri part I can. If you find an 85-86 Capri RS for sale or parts and let me know I'm willing to reward you if I'm able to get the car. Must be 600 or less since that's what my monthly budget currently is.

It's funny you say that. Az is known for destroying interiors. I usaully say the same thing about east cost cars having good interior but rusted bodies. we are the opposite out here.

Phoenix junkyard dog checking in. No capris lately in the south Phx yards that I've seen.

Everyone post their finds and also wish lists.

I did find a 78 zephyr at the yard right south of ecology on 27th. It had black interior that is apparently the same as a fox. The dash was looking great but then I noticed it was cracked where the ashtray was (no console). Probably repairable and wouldn't be seen.

    My wishlist:
    Pace car scoop
    Good dash hull/pad
    Black front seatbelts
Rear bumper cover not sun rotted
Coupe quarter plastics not sun rotted
    99-04 front calipers

BTW 4eyegt, did you pick up the T-top capri complete but non running for $250 on CL about a month ago? I believe it was an 82? I'm wishing I scooped it up and kept it for a future project.

Nope. I still have an 85 Capri RS that belongs to another member in my back yard. Only allowed one non running car at a time in the back. Once that is gone I'm picking up an 89 GT flood car from another member here. The Capri project is on hold again until I can get the 86 GT fixed.

    I had a feelign I should've snapped a few pics
Not wrecked. Hood was partially propped so I didn't see the condition of the top. Color was some sort of yelowish cream or something. Taillights had small blems.

I did think the rear quarter vent things were interesting. They look like they could possibly be a close match to notch quarter trim. It would look like a capri notch quarter lol.

Did you notice the vents were functional, there was a lever at the inside of the car by the rear passenger's head that would open/close the vent. I remember reading about those in the original Ford/Mercury literature.

Here are a few pics from the yard, Turbo Coupe seats looked to be in great condish but of course faded.

Report from Ecology and Pull N Save:

    Pull N Save:
    Aero Mustangs (all 2.3 cars)
    Fox-based aero T-Birds
Mercury Zephyr 2D boxtop with all the bells & whistles. Hit PS quarter before wheel. Hood bad, fenders rough. Bucket seats, no console. Engine turned bezel mostly good, it's in the backseat. Black dash. Butterscotch/black interior. Grille? Headlight doors?? NICE!!! I asked, $34 would have taken those pieces home today. I might have to go back.
Aerostar/Explorer driveshafts (aluminum) out the wazoo. Too bad they were all pretzels from the forklifts. >
    Taurus/Mark VIII fans

    Ecology:
    2-3 LTDs, none LX
1 Boxtop Mercury Cougar, gray. Mostly complete. Body OK.
1 4-door Fairmont sedan, bad DS fender, good PS fender, no hood, bad/missing grille/bumper.
maybe 5 Mark VIIs, one chrome BBS meshie wheel that I saw, flaking around valve stem.
Mercury Lynx (Escort GT) with good gray halos. How the heck do you get those out? They slide up and down but will not come off!

Sorry man I didn't realize that Zephyr was wrecked... wasn't really paying attention. I did notice the functional vents... pretty cool.

Should give those fans a spin before pulling them, I know I've passed up a few Mark 8 fans because I spun them and the bearings felt like they were bad.

Before I knew the headrest trick I sliced open a few seats to get them out. I felt bad but the seats were trashed anyways. The trick is to take a hacksaw blade, pull the headrest up and push the blade down the front center of the post as far as it will go. Then, push the headrest and blade down at the same time together as one unit. THe blade will slide under the locking tab and allow the headrest to come out.

I saw that Lynx a few weeks ago..was almost going to get those seats, and saw the mesh wheel,I think it had a locking lug on it.

Well I hit both Ecologys, and Pull A Part (25th and Buckeye). I keep feeling like I'm wasting my time. Guess I just miss the Cash 4 Clunkers days.

Dadbox pretty much covered it. Did note a few finds though.

Ecology @ Broadway - 2 Fairmont Futuras. A few 4 eye coupes, one an 81 and a few 85 86. Not really anything good.

Ecology on 27th - Old school Falcon?

Pick a Part - Was amazed to find 3x Explorer 5.0s that still had heads and intake. All were "P" versions with non EGR intakes. None of the intakes have plaques. They were all clunkers, suprising because I thought all the clunkers cars were long gone. I'd suggest getting clunkers cylinder heads looked at before using them. I have seen people mention that they turn out ok and the silica does not harm the valve guides or seals.

I think that old Falcon-based Comet was on craigslist recently. Must've really had to get rid of it, I bet Ecology gave him $50 for it. That's too bad but it was just a shell with a long-block in it.

There was that red classic mustang there for a while. At first I thought man what a shame, but damn, there was not much left of that thing the next time I saw it. At least it went to good use by saving other stangs.

I'm heading to Phoenix Saturday and maybe Sunday as well. I have a little extra cash and was wanting to hit up local yards since they were doing 1/2 price every day last time I was there. Are they still doing that at Ecology, Trucks only and Pick a Part? I still need a 351 roller motor even though I'm in no real hurry.

Also if anyone has been to the yards lately what did they have for four eyes and what yard was it at? I only have 4-5 hours and I could spend that just at a couple yards. I'm hoping to hit the good stuff up first if there is any.
