    Default Dual/H-pipe conversion

The link below shows an H-Pipe support. Is this needed when going to factory configuration duals, as the link indicates? Or is there an inexpensive work around?

I am guessing I dont have this already on my 86 V6....

Even if you go with an aftermarket h-pipe, it will have hangers to fit that OE part. I know a lot of guys don't even use those hangers, as they are a Royal PIA to get lined up and mounted. Opinions vary as to whether or not that's a good thing. Obviously, if you have your own setup fabbed, you'll be left to your own judgment as to how to support it.

The reason I ask is because I bought a NOS H pipe w/ cats...didnt know if this would be the easiest to install with this part, or if an 86 would already have this part even though it was not a dual exhaust caroriginally.

The NOS 4-cat piece is a heavy sumbitc#...I'd use the hangers. Have fun with that, BTW. I've done it a few times and all I can say is get the car up as high as you're comfy. I have to go see the chiropractor after a session of h-pipe wrestling, but then I'm gettin' old.

I couldn't get mine to line up with the h pipe in place. I ended up taking the cross member off again, mounting the bracket on the hangers of the h pipe while the pipes were on the ground, and then assebling everything from there. Get a friend to help. I did mine by myself and used everypart of my body, plus a jack to hold everything in place to get things bolted up. And yes, my back was hurting.

Take my word for it, cat'ed X- and H-pipes without hangers SUCK because they're heavy and will eventually sag at the connection between the midpipe and the flow tubes. You'll constantly be having to jack the thing up and re-tighten the flange bolts. This, among several other reasons, is why I HATE my UPR cat'ed X-pipe and only use it for as brief a time as possible to get the car through smog inspection before swapping it back out again.

You can somewhat simplify the install process of a midpipe by cutting off ONE of the two hangers and still get by just fine, but don't go totally hanger-less. Might be a different story with off-road midpipes, but I dunno - my Jeg's off-road X-pipe has hangers and fit like a glove, no problems at all.

That's how I've had mine for almost 10 years. I still use the stock '85 hanger...I just lopped off the driver's side loop and any pipe I've used just hangs from the passenger side. No sagging.

What I did on mine, since, like mentioned above, it's a PITA to line up, I took a torch and took off the original hangers off the h-pipe(In my case, I installed a stock 4 cat pipe, and once I installed a UPR O/R pipe), and then I re-welded hangers to the stock location on the pipes. I find that method much easier than trying to wrestle with the heavy thing.
