Default 3G alternator upgrade procedures to an 85 5.0

Just got a Taurus fan for my 85. Didn't realize that I'd have to upgrade the alternator just to run it. I've found a V6 Mustang 3G alternator at a local parts yard for $40. Figure I'll grab it. What's involved with installing it into my 85? This was a CFI/AOD car that now been converted to carb/T5. How do I wire it in?

Thanks for the link. Seems everything is written for 86-93 EFI cars. Looking for specifically for our older four eyes.

I had my electrician buddy do my car. I can go out and tell you what color the wires are from my harness that i'm using but that's about all i can do to help. The regulator obviously gets eliminated.

Thanks! Yeah that would help out a lot. That's my challenge is the wiring part. I'm sure some wires need to be upgraded for the extra juice.

I'm pretty sure the only wire we upgraded was the power wire from the alt to the coil. I'll get you pics when get the chance...my GF left our camera at her sister's house. I'll try for a cell phone pic but it'll probably suck.

    go to paperformance.com

order their wire with the fuse. it's a 4 guage wire with a 200 amp fuse in the middle of it. I believe your solonoid and battery are on opposite sides of each other, so order the longer wire.

That goes from the post on the back of the alt to the batt side of the starter relay. The other two wires are simple. Wire per the diagram. One of the small wires goes to the same batt side of the starter relay, the other goes to a key on switched 12v source...that's it.

You may need to clearance the alt bracket to make it fit. you'll know if you do when you try and bolt it up.

Well now i feel like a jackass because i can't trace the wires up into my harness far enough to get to the OEM wires because i've taped the hell out of it and really don't wanna cut it all open.

But, i will talk to my buddy who did the wiring for me and i'm sure he can help out some. I just don't know jack about wiring.

Been wondering about this, myself. I've done the 3G swap on a couple of '86+ cars and it's no problem, but the externally-regulated earlier Foxes are a mystery to me as far as the swap goes. I'm assuming you would probably have to snag the stock alternator plug off a junkyard car or get one (if they sell them) from the electrical connector section of someplace like Autozone (y'know, where they have replacement headlamp plugs n' such). Then you'd splice into and extend the wires that normally would go into your external regulator bolted onto the fender and run those over to the plug going into the 3G alternator ... but I haven't a clue which wires get spliced into which wires.

Make sure you get the pigtail off the v-6 car make life alot easier.... I ran a 4 gauge wire from the alternator to the hot side of the starter noid jump the yellow wire from the pig tail over to where the 4 gauge connector bolts on and ran a key on wire to the other wire that excites the regulator

Another option is to use a Variable speed controller for the fan.

    http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

This is what I used on my car with a stock alt. w/underdrive pulley and taurus fan with no problems what so ever. I even bought a 3g alt to install but like I said haven't needed it.

What about the electric choke? Isn't there a wire from the alternator to the choke?

That's pretty much just a 12v switchable line. You can run that from any 12-volt source that switches on with the ignition in "RUN."

The '94-'95 Mustang alternators are 130-amp according to parts store listings.

my 90 3.0 taurus alt was a 130 amp...though I've heard many were actually less.

I hooked up my 3g plain and simple to my 66, and it's not going to be any different on a 4 eyed carb'd car.

Hook up the 4 guage fat cable to the batt side of the starter solonoid, and the other end to the post on the ALT.

This leaves 2 wires, skinny ones..if you took the junkyard harness. If not, paperformance has the plug for the alt.

one wire goes to the batt side of the starter relay, and the other gets a 12v key on source THAT"S IT!! The online diagrams will tell you which wire is which

if you're unsure where a 12v key on source is, run a wire from the radio power wire into the engine bay

Instead of running the one wire to the battery side of the starter relay, wouldn't it be easier just to run it to the 4-gauge post on the back of the alternator, since that cable also connects to the battery side of the solenoid?

Old thread but I want to do this and ditch the external regulator. What happens with the wires to the original voltage regulator? Also, with this swap does the stock guage still function properly?

I just shrink wrapped the ends of the wires going to the old voltage regulator. The gauge still works as normal.
