    Default My SVO Dyno'd finally

Well I have been wanting to get my svo dyno'd since the new motor went in, but I also wanted to give it time to break in. So I put the first 2k miles on it running only 12psi of boost, and being very nice to it..... well mostly. So after this last oil change and tune up I bumped the boost back to 14psi. Boy did that wake the car up! Now since I help out at the local speed shop I took it over there to show them. Cam asked me what I thought I would get for power out of it, and I told him I would happy to see 170rwhp. Keep in mind that the 85 svo like mine is rated at 175 to the motor. So he told me to back it in and strap it down so we could see. Cam was mostly worried about my air fuel ratio ever since I popped the head gasket on the freeway. Once I had it staped down with the sensors in place and everything was double checked cam made the pull to 5k rpms. I had him pull to no more than 5k and stop for saftey sake. I was just praying that it would stay together! Not only did it hold up it surprised Cam, the shop owner and me! Keep in mind most stock 87-93 5.0L 5spd stangs they dyno put down 190-200rwhp......

The little beast put down 185.88 rwhp and 235.51 torque. In true svo form the A/F ratio was fat all the out to 5k where it came to a proper level. Also had I had cam pull it to 5.5-6k rpms I think I may have cracked 190rwhp, but better safe than sorry. Not bad for a mostly stock 85 svo. The only mods to the car are: .020 over pistons, an 86 svo cam, ported lower inline intake manifold, port work on the intake and exhaust ports of the head "nothing in the cambers, stock valves", E-6 manifold, and forced4's cold air intake kit. Now thanks to an exhaust leak at the down elbow I have ordered a 3" down pipe from the MerkurDepot.com boys, and I will get a 3" mid pipe made up. Once thats on along with the ajustable FPR, and bypass kit I will go back and have a full dyno work up with more boost "no more than 17psi" and tuning. And if I want to try to get every last bit out of it I will toss my LA-3 in. I have a feeling I may crack 220-230rwhp, but it will be the torque number I want to see.

Also I had the car scaled before we made the pass on the dyno.

    Drivers side front 922
    Drivers side rear 676
    Passanger side front 862
    Passanger side rear 694

All up total with sub box and 3/4 tank of fuel 3,154 pounds.

Thanks guys! Like I said, the down pipe should be here thursday and I will have the shop bend up the 3" mid pipe as soon as possible. I am not going to hit the beast with more than 17psi, I don't want to put another head gasket on it. Besides it is almost always raining around here and this is my DD. Mike as for the front mount, its going to have to wait until the capri motor is built and running.

Pretty good numbers for less than stock boost levels. The head gasket falure was because there was a problem. There is no reason a 2.3 even with the stock intercooler can't take 20 psi all day long. I did it with an IHI turbo for 5+ years on my DD 88 turbo coupe and never had a gasket falure. You will like what the big exhaust does to the car!

That pass was made with 14psi which was stock for the early motors. The motor may take 20psi, but I have a feeling I won't need that for DD around here. I really won't know untill I play with it...

Good pull on that 2.3T. Mine made 145 flywheel HP stock, and with all that I am changing I have no idea what to expect from mine. Good to hear yours pulls and runs well after the rebuild.

    No....

I was going to get it on last month but because I started my new "and short lived" job I missed getting it into the shop. So it looks like this wednesday I get to slip it in. I don't know however if I will be able to get it dyno'd at that time.

Now as an early FYI the mercurdepot.com down pipe fits very well once you cut the hanger off of it. I dropped my stock exhaust just to see if the new DP would stop my leak at the elbow and yes it does but damn was it loud all by itself!

have a question about that graph. if one line is torque and the other HP. the lines should cross at 5200 rpm. not at 4200 rpm.

Thats what my dad was saying to, and I have no idea. I have to ask when I go back to the shop.

One reason the graph doesnt cross at 5200 is because the scales for the hp and torque are different. The graph on the left goes up to 200 for hp and on the right it goes to 250 for torque. So if you reset them to equal it should.

    Ok quick update....

I spent the afternoon at the shop and got the new system on and welded up. I was so worried that it would sound like a damb ricer but to my pleasent surprise it sounds like a v-8 mod motor.... sorta. All I can say is the bigger dynomax muffler http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WL...2/?image=large is most likely responcable for that. I didn't have time to get it dyno'd but that will come soon, as have a few more bits to russle up first. But on the way home I could tell there was a difference both in power and spool up. You can REALLY hear the turbo spin up now! And no I have yet to step on it yet because I need to re-adjust the gillis boost valve to keep it in check. Just playing with it lightly I get it to put out 15psi of boost at a little better than 1/2 throttle. So I am sure if I were to stomp it I would see 22+psi... Pictures, video and a better butt-o-meter test to come tomarrow.

Ok I took the car out and adjusted the boost to 12psi to be safe until I can get it back on the dyno to make sure I am not going lean. Now even with the boost set to 12psi I am definately making more power than before! If I had to venture a guess at how much I picked up, 20+rwhp I think is a safe bet. Power also comes on in a nice smooth fashion.

    Anyways time for pics......

And a little sound clip for you guys..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oV--gLJo0JQ

The next time I go to the dyno it will be after I add a PE computer, brown tops, AFPR, and my bypass valve. I honestly think that I will see 230rwhp with 16-17psi of boost. So place your bets now....
