Worked on the car and updated the blog today.

First task was to remove the front clip and see how bad the damage was underneath the batter area. Well, it was pretty bad.

I also found out that the car was hit in the front, probably the drivers side. Little things like different hardware on the drivers side, incorrect valance mounting etc. I also broke half a dozen bolts off. Mostly things I can replace when it goes back together but most of the time was fighting with rusted bolts!

The rust under the battery is pretty bad. A friend who is a body man/painter stopped by and said we'd need to cut it all out. Fortunately, he has a friend that can do it in my garage. For now I'm going to leave it and do more things that I can and save money for the things I'll need to pay someone for.

I also found out the passenger side wheel is rusted to the rotor. Sprayed the crap out of it but it won't budge. Oh well, add that to the list!

Wow...that's an ambitious project you got there! The long road is the rust repair..after that it should start to move fairly quickly...don't give up on it and let the great people here encourage you along the way!!! And please please please don't convert it to a V8...we have enough of those

Wow, it took a week before someone told me to not put a 5.0 in it. j/k

I'm leaning towards the 2.3 so I've started monitoring the boards, ebay etc. to find one.

Looks mostly to be surface scale type rust versus through rust.

I'm not sure my family is as supportive as I thought ...

A friend asked my 11 y/o why I was still home yesterday when she picked her up for school. My 11 y/o reply: "he has to talk to the government about the rusty car".

I was home to get the title transferred and to surprise her at school, but after calling the RS 'the rusty car' I almost changed my mind.

I begin the rust cleanup this weekend, starting in the hatch interior.

She may always call it the 'Rusty Car' from now on, but when you are done with it she will probably be begging to drive it (my girlfriend named my TurboGT 'Rosie' because it was to be her car, until we got the convertible. The car isn't even running or rose colored, but we still refer to it by that name to clarify which car the parts that showed up are for).

Wow that look incredible. I'll keep you in mind when I start looking for parts. Right now I'm in 'rust removal' step. I doubt I'll get it up on a rotisserie like you did, but I want to kill all the cancer now.

    Thanks,

Today was way too busy with family obligations (including one 'honey do' item that I've neglected for about 6 months ...)

I added the rear hatch support (first new parts on the car!) and removed the back seats and all interior plastic except the dash.

Weather and family permitting tomorrow I start the rust removal from the interior.

    Default Update 5/30

I've been working a few hours each weekend on the Capri, but not a lot to show so far.

I removed all the sound deadener and the rest of the interior (except the dash). Today I started on the interior rust, starting in the hatch/spare tire area.

    Results:

As you can see I didn't get all the rust. I was worried about hitting the wiring going to the fuel tank, so I need to drop the tank to finish.

I also bought a replacement center console off a guy on Corral.net. Not cheap at $135 shipped, but it something I was missing and worried about finding.

next step (tomorrow maybe?) I'll start on the rust on the back seat bottom and hinges.

    More cleanup this weekend.

I finally got the damn trailer hitch off the rear bumper without damaging it. I ended up grinding the bottom bolts off with the angle grinder. Seriously rusted parts.

I also started cleaning up the rear seats. Drivers side has some issues, but the passenger cleaned up nice.

I would have done more, but I threw a surprise 40th birthday party for my wife last night. I'm really tired

I'm leaning towards doing that for the passenger side. The driver doesn't look too bad. I'm going to hit it with the grinder next weekend and see what the damage looks like once I get past the surface rust.

Thanks for the advice, and nice RS Turbo!

Luckily we have replacement floorpans.......it will make quick work of your rust issue. Wish my 84 GTTurbo were that rust-free.

This morning I started on the passenger side floor pan. From the 'before' picture is looks really bad and I was worried how much rusted through all the way. I crawled underneath and found only one spot where the rust had gone through.

Hitting the back seat part with the wire brush, sandpaper, wire wheel and angle grinder I removed a lot of the rust and figured out how big the rusted through area really is. It is about 3" long by 1/2" thick. (top right of the picture) I haven't hit it from below yet, so it might grow (sorry, no 'during pictures, it is nowhere near done.)

After about 40 minutes on my knees I had to take a break and work on something else. I first removed the sun visors, then took the front bumper, radiator and A/C condenser off. Both the Radiator and condenser show signs of damage, so I'll probably need to replace them as well.

The frame holding the Marcal lights has a serious bend in it, but it the lights are straight in the frame. I think this can be hammered out based on what I've seen others do.

I also cleaned up the rust on the drivers frame rail and got a good look at how bad it is. I'm still committed to fixing this car ;-)
