Default 1984 Capri RS Turbo - my new project

Today I bought a 1984 Capri RS Turbo. Unfortunately it is in pretty rough shape. No motor or transmission, no seats and lots of surface rust.

Luckily there does not appear to be any rust in the floor boards or around the hatch!

    I've also started a blog about what I'm doing/going to do. http://84caprirs.blogspot.com/

First steps are to get the car cleaned up so it doesn't stink!

After that, I think I'll start on the body rot.

Congrats on your find. After you remove the surface rust, looks like it a solid car.

looks like a nice project. dont worry about the rust, from the pics it looks like only minor surface rust. thats what sandpaper/media blasters/acid dipping is for.

A guy had it for sale on craigslist. No motor, no transmission and with the surface rust it looked pretty bad. I guess I just lucked into it.

He'd had it for 5+ years in his yard while he worked on another project.

I updated the blog today and here are some new pictures.

Only one I'm nervous about is under the battery box/swaybar mount. Is it as bad I think it is?

    Engine bay:

    rust on roof above hatch:

    rust under the battery:

rust under the sway bar mount/battery:

    build sheet. Damn it!

    passenger floor pan

console cut in half (NO not by me):

    excellent condition dash:

    pile of parts:

    hood (not the original)

Welcome to FEP, from another 84 Turbo Capri RS owner. That's quite a project you have there... Good luck and keep that blog updated!

    Default 84 Capri

You might be able to save the build sheet.I think you can wet it and get it off the floor pan. Then once it is dry, soak it in PPG Acrycleen. That will clean it upand make the dark area readable.

Any thoughts on color/wheel choice yet? Iknow it is a long ways off, but it never hurts to plan ahead.

Not yet. My 11 y/o daughter did ask me if I was going to leave those "ugly wheels" on.

I'll most likely paint it the original.

What color was it originally?! Looks like a patchwork of colors and surface rust right now.

It was the blue/steel gray that all the 84 RS Turbos had. The guys i bought it from said it was the original paint. That he sanded to start restoring, then got distracted. The white is primer from where he sanded and cleaned up that part.

Thanks for posting the additional pictures. Looks like plenty of work, but overall a very do-able project in my opinion. I always liked that blue/gray color (don't remember its name). Good luck and keep us posted, we will be here to cheer you on.

It will look good when it is repainted in original color.
