Default What size speaker in the dash?

I am getting ready to upgrade the speakers in the 85 vert. I know the two side speakers are 3.5 inch speakers, but what size is the speaker in the middle of the dash or what size could be fit in there without cutting? Thanks.

Oh the amp was in there? Mine is missing and I have never had to mess with a sound system in a fox car. I might still put a speaker in there nad put the amp somewhere else.

yea im sure you can find all sorts of threads about it on here, some people say that the sounds quality won't be best because of the location, it could never hurt to just try it, its your car.

I would guess a 4x6 would fit....maybe a 5x7 at best. Did a search on Crutchfield but they don't show any center dash options? I know some of the cars back then had AM only with center speaker only.

The 82 GT I bought new came from the factory w/ an AM radio. However there were two speakers in the dash, in the same locations as the stereo speakers. There was not a speaker in the center or in the hatch area.

I'm just not good with audio stuff.....period. I know that there are two speakers on each side of the dash and two in each door and that's it. I've got a friend that's good with that kind of stuff and he is going to help me out. I appreciate all of the input.

I may be wrong, but I thought I remember "stereophiles" saying that using both dash speakers AND the center speaker, using a center channel gave a nice stereo effect. I may be wrong however

Before '82, the 'standard' AM radio had one speaker and it was located in the center of the upper dash. When the two front speaker option was ordered the center speaker was deleted.

Starting in '82, that center mounting location was used only for an amplifier as part of the Premium Sound system. Otherwise the center mounting location was not used for anything at all.

It has been a while since I have done speaker placement in an older fox body, about 15 years to be exact. I recall being able to fit a 5x7 in the center (not that I thought the sound was improved by it) but I recall needing to make a baffle for it mount to. I do not recall there being an issue with depth.

Personally I would not waste time trying to install a center speaker, especially if you are just going to power it with the headunit & no external amplification.

Yep! This is a good mod. You run leads from + wire from the left and the - right front
speakers to the center speaker. It will then fire on all sounds that are common to both
channels (thus it doesn't interfere with stereo separation)
