I got mine because it was sporty, it got good mileage, and I liked the way it looked (in an odd way). I loved that car and drove it all over the country for 4 years chasing my dream with all my junk in the back. It went to the Rockies and plowed its way through a 2" snow blizzard, it went all over the south, I got my first speeding ticket with it (112 in a 55, lost my license, now I don't drive). I had put 60k glorious miles on it when I finally parked it here... still has the original paint and TRX tires!

Very cool. My first car had those wheels. I always thought they were a good looking wheel. I got my first speeding (first of many) ticket in my EXP too, but I was only going 57 in a 45. Again, mine was black with the gray sport interior, a red pinstripe, and those wheels. I thought it was a really good looking car. I put the turbo rear spoiler on mine. It also had a rare option, a graphic equalizer with the radio. That one option delayed production of the car for 6 months. I always have loved the "shaded taillights" on the later EXPs. I think they look cool, especially with a black car.

It never once broke down. Not one part or accessory ever failed. Even the trim is completely in tact. It was a well engineered little car.

I agree. They were a well built, reliable little car. The Escort GT Turbo never had one problem. It was rumored that the Turbos were unreliable, but I changed my oil every 2,000 miles and never had one problem. I think changing the oil was the key.

I always wanted an EXP turbo. Years ago I was cruising around in my EXP when some guy pulled me over and asked if I was interested in purchasing one. I jumped at the opportunity and followed him to a junk yard where his black on black turbo EXP sat. It was picked over, rusted out and missing the title. He claimed his ex girlfriend had the title and the reason it was in the yard was because the car was impounded by the police after he outran a state trouper with it.. The deal became even more shady when he said if I wanted the car, I would have to pay him up front, but Id have to haul it out on my own and make sure to do so on a weekend. I quickly backed out.

Ive been looking for a good turbo car since.

Here is a picture of our two 1984 EXP's Both black with gray interiors. The standard one was a auto, no air, 4 way seat , full console, cruise, stereo with cassette. The other one was Turbo powered with EFI. 5 speed, tilt wheel premium stereo with tape, Recaro seats with halo headrests, sunroof, Kone shocks, upgrade rack and pinion steering, I added the Turbo decals to the sides, FAST and one of the best cars we owned. I have owned over 50 cars and this one ranked in the top ten. It had the feel like my 86 Capri does!

It's so frustrating. I can't get my insurance company to put collector car insurance on the EXP and Escorts. Why don't these cars meet their criteria?

Perhaps because they could be used for daily transportation.

Do you have them registered with classic plates?

Great story. Some day you'll find one (and yes, I know you know that).

Yes. They are all registered with historical plates. In Ohio, the only requirement is that the car is 25 years old for historic plates.

Wow that is a surprise with historic plates.

What insurance company is it? Have you tried other companies?
