All the good deals on them are a million miles away from me.
That's when a $700 car gets $1300 tagged on for shipping and becomes a $2000 car.
Wah wah wah.
But EXPs / LN7s are uber cool.
I had a Dove Grey one for a Demo back in 85. It had aftermarket wheels and the full front spoiler, it was a cool little car that was a ball to drive.

I'll own another Four Eye one of these days!
No exp GT! I owned a 1984 1/2 exp turbo I bought in 1990, car was mint and came from California, I had a friend with his dealers license buy it at an auction in PA had factory tinted window, grey top half, bottom came with a low profile black shirt packaged wrapped around whole car with grey turbo on sides. Car was pretty quick for only having a 1.6 the turbo made the car move, weighted in at 2000 pounds, blow away a few small block v8's with it no problem. Wish I had or could find one like it now, can't find any info on a 84 1/2 the title states it to be, all I find is either 84 or 85 years no halls, and one even look like the one I owned.
Here's an old Motorweek road test on an 84 EXP turbo from back in the day..

I'm confused. I drove one when they were new for a day. Didn't think it was a very good car. Is it love just because it's a Ford?
They werent bad cars. I drove an 82 for a while and it was pretty reliable, got awesome MPG and handled really nice. I had the worlds slowest drag race with this car against my buddies Honda CRX lol. It was funny cos no one knew we were drag racing . The EXP had independent rear suspension and could corner better than my buddies CRX (CRX had a solid rear axle). It was a fun little car to tool around in.
i have slowly been looking for a turbo exp, to put beside the mustang turbo gt
I love the EXP Turbo, and its brother, the Escort GT Turbo. They were designed by the SVO team at the time. They were made from 84 to the first half of 85. Here are some pictures of mine.
wow, nice cars.

I think the CRX I raced was an HF model. It was unbelievably slow, but got awesome MPG. It was a great fight for my EXP, both only made around 70hp lol. Weren't the turbo EXP/Escorts rated to be around 110 hp? I suppose thats pretty close to a crx si.
I also had a 77' Datsun 280z with an 80 ZX turbo engine in it at the time. That car would eat supras and crap out Del sols!
I think the truly original EXP/LN7 suffered most from the lack of Ford marketing. I remember when they came out, they just landed on Ford dealer lots like some alien car with no explanation. For whatever reason Ford did not get out front with a kitchy cool marketing campaign to create a culture around the new EXP/LN7. Something like the marketing for the VW Bug would have gone a long way to making young people buy EXP/LN7s. And so they suffered from that point on.
True, I bought my first new car in 1983, it was a Mercury LN7 GS with 1.6 HO. I recall it being fairly expensive, but it was also pretty cool compared to the run of the mill economy cars of that time, and gas was expensive. I got mine because it was sporty, it got good mileage, and I even liked the way it looked (in an odd way). I loved that car and drove it all over the country for 4 years chasing my dream with all my junk in the back. It went to the Rockies and plowed its way through a 2' snow blizzard, it went all over the south, I got my first speeding ticket with it (112 in a 55, lost my license, now I don't drive). I had put 60k glorious miles on it when I finally parked it here... still has the original paint and TRX tires!

Thanks. They are all in rust free, running condition. My EXP has been repainted and has 92,000 miles. I have the original wheels, which I am trying to find someone to refinish them. Once I do, I will put them on the car.
The gray Escort has 63,000 original miles and has about 80% original paint.
The black one has 39,000 original miles and has been repainted once. I have all the original paperwork including the original window sticker.
My first car was a black 84 EXP 1.6 Liter H.O. auto. It is in the background in this picture. The black Escort GT Turbo pictured was my brother's back in 85. In 87, I bought it from him and put an orange pinstripe on it, and drove it to college. The 85 red T-Top Mustang GT was my Dad's at the time. Picture was taken back in 1985.
I wanted to relive my youth, so I found cars just like these and bought them. Same color and everything. Only difference was that I wanted a black Turbo EXP, which is what I wanted back then, but my Dad wanted me to have an auto for my first car. Also, his Mustang was an auto and I bought a 5-speed as a replacement.
Something else I remember being impressed with was how solid that car was. It just felt substantial compared to other small cars. Even though I took good care of it (always changed the oil, washed and waxed it, never wrecked it) I drove that car with the Gusto of a 20 year old, but that car never gave a whimper. It never once broke down. Not one part or accessory ever failed. Even the trim is completely in tact. It was a well engineered little car.
