I think the 87-88 Cougar/Tbird 5.0 was a truck motor, which would comprise cast pistons,
a mild non HO roller cam, and E7 heads. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Nope. The block and heads were actually engineered originally for the '86 Thunderbird. They will have E6SE engineering numbers. The pistons were cast. The cam will have an '85 generic Ford engineering number and it was used for several other FLM model lines.
What's the latest on this?
I guess it was NO DICE, and passed on it.

I think you made a wise decision, but I'm not a fan of the Cougar. I love the thunderbirds, but those small Cougar changes rub me the wrong way.

I love the 89/97 Xr7. This is a cool car, it has good power from the SC 3.8, 5.0, 4.6 engines, rigid chassis, IRS, it handles and rides good, nice interiors, they still look pretty sleek (timeless?), and they're still fairly cheap!
