Default Another Hertz SVO found rotting away in Texas

I know everybody here loves these kinds of stories. This was just discovered this morning and the story is still progressing. Here is the story so far:

Guy at Turboford lists his three SVOs for sale for $800.

    http://www.turboford.net/ubb/ultimat...c;f=6;t=013238

They are promptly sold and the new owner starts checking them out a little closer.

    http://www.svoca.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21687

The white 85 has the VIN etched into the windshield, door glass, sunroof, and hatch windows. It also has the VIN etched into the wheels and the SVOs are located in Texas. These details scream Hertz Rent-a-Racer.

Sure enough based on the SVOCA registry database it is an original 85 9L / Oxford White with cloth SVO. Based on the other documented Hertz SVOs this one has the correct series VIN and was nearly lost to being parted out and / or crushed. It was built the same day as mine and also another SVOCA member who posts here. It was built within four of mine and three of the other member.

The moral of this story... do your homework. Check available resources first before selling cars like SVOs or even worse send one off to the junkyard just because "it's rusty".

The guy on turboford was definately NOT going to part them out. As a member there, I can tell you they are just as fanatical of the SVOs as we are of the 4eyes.

I saw that today. awesome find for him. I never knew that the vin was ever etched on the glass. that's pretty cool.

I've been over at Turboford myself for quite a few years now. You are right that the seller wanted to sell them whole. And yes there are quite a few that want to save SVOs but there are some that have parted ones that weren't that bad. These could have just as easily been parted and lost by an unknowing buyer without anybody ever finding out that one of them was a Hertz. The seller clearly didn't know what he had and they were just rusted out SVOs to him.

    Here is his original post:

"This time it's for reals.. had to move out of my house and I need to get SVO's out of here.
Have an 86 with front damage and two complete parts cars (84 & 85)

I'd rather the cars go to someone who can use them, rather than selling to Junk Yard. The 86 has very good interior condition. The 84 has rebuild front end suspension with Energy Suspension bushings. MSD ignition wires, the engine was rebuilt. Head ported/polished. send me your email if you are interested on pics. I need to get these things out of here. I'll throw in extra stuff that I collected.. new set of rear koni's,"

He even refers to the 85 as a complete parts car. His words not mine. There is no mention of the VINs being etched into the glass or wheels.

Then this was one of the replys:

"Quoted from Big B-"Well, hopefully I haven't made a mistake buying them, my wife isn't that happy about it but, she will get overy it. "
I seriously doubt you made a mistake. Take the best parts, assemble one good car, keep a couple of spares, sell the rest, make your money back on the deal. You've seen what just the side spats bring these days. I'm more of a TC guy, but I'd have jumped all over that deal. Awesome score. Always hate to benefit from someone elses misfortune, but at least they didn't end up in the scrap yard."

Please don't misunderstand my meaning. My point is that it pays to check out what you have before trying to sell it. Even if this SVO has some rust issues it is definitely worth more than $266.67 ( $800 divided by three ).

I'm not bashing anybody and I'm just trying to show this as an example. It applies to any collector car as well and not just SVOs.

I think its cool that a odd car was found...i also think that he paid a fair price 266.xx...Just think about if the old owner said i have a Hertz car and i want 1000.oo to me i would say, Thats out of my reach cause by the time i add up my time parts and other people labor you have car that you hope to get your monies back.

Its very hard to tell by the pics what shape its in but be sure to make that diamond in the rough shine its going to take a lot of time/cash it would be a labor of love

Now i know not everyone here isnt going to agree with me thats OK...i like to restomod cars myself and most of the time i find cars that people dont want anymore, buy at a good price then i do what i like to it, then i get tired of looking at them... sell them "most of time at a lost" Latley i've got a hard on for 2 door wagons from 60s and mid 70s reason for my SVO f/s

Anyway..... see U's at the SVO Reunion

    Great story and find!

I always find it amazing the imbeciles who tear apart a car and then later shrug their shoulders when told that they just made a $5k mistake.

Now adays it takes like 10 minutes to post something to the right forum and get a result by the end of the day.

Seems like no one has learned anything from all those crazy classic muscle car stories we read about years ago.

I can agree with you Ken P.......................that is why I am VERY picky as to who I sell any of my cars to (which might explain why I still have all of mine!).

The new owner just posted a bunch of pics at SVOCA. I know not everyone is a registered user over there, so I'm assuming KP will copy and paste....

Too bad the 85 don't have a title, he may want to check and see if the car was stolen back in the day.

EDIT: I tried to add these last two as attachments so everybody could see a clearer view of the VIN etchings in the glass and wheels. I can't get them to enlarge for some reason?

It's got rust around the sunroof opening and some in the doors / hatch. Nothing too scary compared to some others I've seen before. The underside looks very good and it is a complete car which helps.

It even has the outer marker lights which is a huge plus.
