    Default My Dad's coupe UPDATE....Sad 4/6/09

My parents are moving to a house down the street from me. To help them, I brought my dads coupe to my house for a few days to get it out of their way.

Unfortunately my dad has been very sick for the last few years, and the car has been neglected. Dad has been feeling better lately, and wants to fix the car up. Unfortunately for the car, his idea of "fixed" up is Cobra decals, gauges, and fog lights. I will try to get this stuff fixed before I give him the car back. Hopefully also the car will soon be repainted the factory color, jalepeno red, or something fairly close.

The drive home (@ 60 miles) was interesting because dad has "tried" to tune to the carb. His idea of tuned was so rich the car was lopeing.....choking on the gas. I'm no whiz at tuning a carb, but I did get it good enough to make the trip in one piece.

Nice! I've always been partial to the 4-eyed coupes.

Thanks! It is very much a project, and kinda rough on the edges. I think it is sitting low on the rear because the trunk is full, I packed the car for the move...also a set of 68 302 heads are in the trunk.

When in it's prime this was nice runner, balanced and blueprinted 306, crane cam (RIP), Edlebrock carb, Accel ignition, maybe a few more little things that I just can't remember right now. Even with the 2.73 gears it used to spin the tires like mad! Today, I went for a spin and couldn't even get it to chirp second. I think the carb is way of tune, and really has never been jetted for this car anyway.

My Dad is 76 and has the same delusions of grandure .
I'm just glad he doesnt have any cars left .
The last one he had was a 71 Firebird Formula , 400 and same automatic , he toasted the engine , it had brand new tires on it , so he covered it with a tarp .
It sat for 15 years like that , then he suddenly sold it to some guy for 500.00
    I was pissed

When I get the boxes out, for fun, I'll take a pic of the interior. Was a fairly nice, mint grey interior, but now it has (in addition to the gauge cluster) Amp meter, battery gauge, oil pressure, water temp, and a 3 inch tach. There is also an added 4 port power outlet (cig lighter), JVC CD player, and a 600 watt amp pushing....wait for it....replacement speakers in the stock locations.

Needless to say to the stock alternator has hard time keeping up. Oh, the fog lights mounted in the grill between the headlights aren't helping much either, they were set to come on with the ignition....I did get that much fixed, if it was up to me I'd remove them and throw them in a pile under the gauges.

Just a minor update. My dad passed away 3/17. This has been the toughest time of my life. Unfortunately we did not get the chance to work on the car together since the move.

My dad got me started on Mustangs.....I used to like camaros. Dad was, and is my hero I miss him more than I ever thought possible.

Thank you, I'm just getting to where I can talk about him, without losing my mind. The car is dormant now, and will likely stay that way. Mom and I aren't ready to touch his things.....

I feel your pain. He must have been a good Dad /Husband.

When you're ready, you can honor him by completing the project...if you so desire.
