I did! I used it on my Capri and my Lightning. It goes on very well, from what I have seen and read, it looks just like the original dynamat. I cleaned the floor, doors, etc VERY well before applying it. One roll does about 25 square feet, takes about 5 rolls to do a car, rolls are about $16 each, $80 total plus some elbow grease, and cleaner. 1 roll weighs about as much as a quart of water-2 pounds. So you are adding 10-15 pounds to your car. Besides the words lightweight and sounddeadner do not belong in the same sentence when discussing automotive applications.

No, it dosen't smell at all--it is covered on one side with aluminum--just like dynamat!

Also, like mentioned good suspension bushings, and new seals would go along too.
Dead link Chris, do you have the item # for it so I can check it out??

how did it work, was it worth it?

I ripped out all that heavy tar crap when I redid my car. The carpet that I bought had a thick "jute" backing. I could belive the difference how quiet it was.

I pulled the stereo out because there was no where to put speakers in a vert without cutting up stuff that shouldn't be cut...so I fly with no radio...two tiny dash speakers won't cut it, and the rear speakers are muffled and covered inside the panels under the seat...makes no sense why ford didn't engineer better speaker areas for the verts (did in the later years though)

I've been fighting with a noisy vert too. Most of mine comes from the seals along the sides; the windows are not fully seating into the weather stripping, windows are not aligned properly and the top isn't aligned properly; there is a lot of sound coming up and under the front header. I discovered all of this while disassembling the interior and reading that little vert top adjustment pamphlet that shows the correct adjustments. When I took the back seat out, there is no insulation/carpet on the floor under the seat or on the firewall between the passenger compartment and trunk. There is none behind the quarter plastics, and little in the trunk itself let alone anything significant behind the door panels, etc. On my 01, they saw fit to insulate the top so the metal frame doesn't show - I think that helps a lot and there is a retro-fit kit for foxes. Also, the 01's top where it meets the header is redesigned to elimenate that small but significant air-dam.

Regarding sound-deadening, I ran across the following link by a guy who did some "non-scientific" testing of the popular deadeners designed for cars and those adapeted to cars such as roofing material: http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/. You might want to read that before embarking on a massive sound deadener project. I also have included the link for RaaMaudio, makers of RaaMat: http://www.raamaudio.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?p=hm. Good luck.

X2.......I was leary at first because people said the tar smell would be there, but it did not smell at all. I was able to get away with using 4 1/2 rolls which is a whole lot cheaper than Dynamat. I thought it was easy to install too because of the cutting. Just need some scissors and anything that can be used to apply pressure to make sure of a good seal.

I stuffed used carpet padding (just like under the hatch carpet) inside the rear interior plastic panels, kick panels and extra layer in the hatch floor of my car and it made a big difference. And, it was free. I would put Dynamat or similar product inside the doors due to potential moisture. To me, the extra little bit of weight was worth the improved sound quality inside the car.

that was a good link posted above...thanks.

I took the vert for a drive again and paid long attention to wear all the noise was coming from.

what it was NOT was mechanical.

it's 100% wind noise, road noise and exhaust.

the exhaust I can live with.

My windows are horribly gapped...and the seals shot on the bottoms of the door. I'll start with figuring how to adjust the 1/4 windows out more to meet the windows. that should helps seal those cracks. Then I'll order more weather stripping for the door.

I think I may order a roll of sound deadener just to put under the rear seat and on the seat back...I think that will help isolate some of the back noises.

    Keep the top down.

No, really, I understand what you're saying. My convertible is loud. One thing that made a HUGE difference in quieting down my car were new axle bearings. I didn't realize how much noise they made until I got new ones put in.

Also, I spent this whole summer fixing vibrations and shakes in the car. Consequently, it's much quieter now that it isn't shaking around anymore.

Without driving your car, though, it is hard to judge exactly what you're hearing. But I think one of the major things you have to consider is the pure fact that with a convertible top, you're going to hear alot of road noise, no matter how your floor is insulated. The sound just travels right through the vinyl top, especially around the back tires. The rest, in my opinion, is otherwise wind noise. I don't want you to go spending time and money into insulating your floor to find out that a majority of what you hear isn't because of that. What would be ideal is to drive another convertible and compare them.

I really wish Ford had designed a headliner into the convertible top. It would look better inside and probably be 50% quieter. But they didn't, thus the trade off of having a convertible. But, living in Florida, I make it every day.

Edit: It looks like I missed that last post there, where you basically come to a similar conclusion. If you do put any sound deadener in, I'd be interested to know how much it helps. I wish I could design a headliner for the top, though. What a difference that would make.

actually the chysler lebaron's from the 80's had the EXACT same convertible top that ours did, and they've got a soft top on the inside...I've always wanted to snag one for my vert, but I always forget too.

It should be a direct bolt on, so to speak...I forgot about that. ebay here I come

whoa. so you're saying we can just put that in our cars? and the top will fold down with the glass window no problem?

I'm still skeptical as to how much noise it will solve, but it has to be an improvement.

    Wow that would be great.

what I am saying, is I know for a FACT that the 90's lebaron's went with the same exact top as the mustangs...i'll pull up a picture soon.

being that it's the same, why wouldn't it fit??

I've seen them installed..makes your top look like a solid roof from the inside

Wind noise? I took my 86 gt convertable on a 1600 mile roadtrip to Detroit... I got out the duct tape and went around the windshield, side windows really made a difference, I know that I need weatherstriping, I also need to adjust the top a bit lower on the drivers side. The tape ain't pretty, but makes a huge difference.
The trim panel at the top of the windshield has a foam tape type weatherstrip where it attaches to the windshield frame. Without it, you will feel the wind, and wonder where the water comes from.

Here are a couple of pictures of the Home Depot "Quick Roof" Insulation installed. Like I said, I was very pleased with it and it only cost me $85 with half a roll to spare.

Believe it or not I would start with the doors. I have had tons of older fox's and most share that problem. I first learned this back in the day when I put a set of 91 doors on my old 82 and I thought I had a new car. But now a days even 91 doors are on the old side. So.... I would replace hinge pins, the bushings for the window tracks and if you can grab your window and move it up and down about an inch i would replace your motors or plastic gears on the motors. Lastly all wipes and rubbers. Also, the original sound deadener on the floors comes unadhered after all of these years so I would replace with new deadner of your choice. I used dynomat on my floor and roof and noticed a huge difference.
