i moved to the 16 inch ponies, and i like the size, but i must agree that i loved the trx's and how they looked, so i'd prolly go for a 16x7 TRX

I'm a purist I guess, but since TRXs cost so much I'd buy a set of 16s to keep the original appearance for driving and use the TRXs for show. Not that it stops me too much now but I won't feel so bad about doing burnouts anymore
Count me in for a set of 15 or 16 I sure would like to buy a cheaper tire!
We havn't bought a four eye yet, but we love the TRX look. A 15 inch TRX type wheel would be a welcome gift.
I am not a fan of oversized wheels on these cars. It just doesn't look right.
Period correct FTW.

I would prefer the 16" size, and I think you would be hard pressed to see the difference from stock at more than a few feet away. I have never found out how the orginal TRX wheels were made, and they were not that expensive of an option when I bought the 79. And BTW, the tabs on the center caps are starting to get brittle and break off........age you know....

I cannot remember exactly where I heard this information but I know that I spoke with someone recently that originally the TRX wheel was supposed to be a 16" wheel on the Mustangs and Capris. Ford wanted to have an "edge" on Chevrolet and the Fbody but again I cannot remember specifics but there was some sort of auto manufacterer politics and Chevy raised a stink about he 16" wheel size...person I spoke with about this new one of the Ford engineers working on the Mustang and was also the guy who helped put the handling package together for the new 1979 Mustang and Capris. I really think it would be better to make the TRX wheel a 16x7 or 16x8 since that was supposedly Ford's original intention. The 15x7 wheels look so puny inside the fox body's wheel wells. Why do you think the 16x7 Pony wheels are so popular? It's a great all around size for the foxbody - not too big, not too small plus the wheel styling is clean and great looking. Also, why not try to improve the handling (like somebody already mentioned) a little???? I mean we do like to DRIVE these cars don't we LOL?!
Just my 2 cents
I remember reading years ago that when Ford was putting the TRX handling package together, BMWs were the cars to copy after. Since the BMWs used 390 mm tires, Ford followed suit to build a handling pkg. with those because 16 inch tires were not available yet.
Makes sense to me. Thus the metric tires stuck for 6 model years.
I can't dispute that BMW was an influence but Ford certainly advertised at the time, which was the late seventies and early eighties, that many of their cars had a European styling influence. There was also a push at the time for the U.S. to move to the Metric system for a standard in measurement. As we all know, that was met with fierce resistance.

About a year ago, I saw a local Ferrair 308 with TRX tires, WTF?? here are 2 websites that give history and availability of TRX in sizes that are really rare.

Is there any Idea on what these will cost I am sure they would have to make quite a few sets to keep up with demand so that should help with the price?
Current ponys:
1982 GT T-Top (Silver/Red), needs motor/trans and lots of TLC.
1985 GT Vert (Blue/grey), saved from scrap yard needs a lot.
1987 GT T-Top (Yellow/Grey)
Previous heard:
1987 GT (Red/Red), 1984 G.T. 350 T-Top, 1986 LX Wht/Grey Coupe
that place is in england, and with the exchange its cheaper to go thru coker tire imo
So saying 12-1500 for a set of 16x8's.]

Coker Tire sells the 220-55-390 for $ 417.00 each. So lets see....that's $ 1,668.00 plus shipping for 4. WOW !
I wonder if anyone has bought these tires at that price? That is SO INSANE!!! Even at half that price it's too much. I would really love a set of TRX 16"x7" rims....got a set of 225-55-16" BFG's ready to install. Anyone know when these new rims will be available???

Are these rims possibly going to reproduced?

we need these like yesterday!!!!
That combo seems to be perfect.
I run those 225-55-16 BFGs on my Turbo Coupe 7 inch wheels and they look nice.
They have a wide, "square shoulder" look to them much like the original Michelin 220 TRX's.
That almost sounds like the perfect combo.
Also, a 7 inch wheel can handle up to a 295-50 tire. Here is a pic of my 295-50-16 BFG radial T/A's on factory 16 x 7 Pony wheels. They ride fantastic !
Those front tires are puny 215s tho.

isn't anyone concerned that big blue might not appreciate their wheel getting remade as much as we would?

You can copy it as long as you don't use the copy right names...ford, trx, etc. and if you look at the other look alikes they don't use names but they use style numbers.
I would like a 17x8 myself, and a 5 lug would be nice also, but beggars can't be choosers and at this point I'd be happy with any size other than the metric.
83 GT Turbo
That would be my choice too. I always liked the looks of them on the cars, but I'm not going to give up my brakes for then either.
Those 295's might "fit" that 7" wide wheel, and might "ride" ok, but they are technically too wide for that wheel and would not handle all that hot. I hate feeling my tires "squirm" around as I try and get the car set into a corner.
