There's definitely two wires going into that one spot on the GRAY box.
And the green wire does have a yellow dot, you can barely see it in this picture.

I'm going to go fish around under the dash on the GT.
It makes me feel productive.
OK, in the parts book...under those numbers on the boxes there is for the Mustang a 12B528 module called:
The Control Assy (Deceleration Fuel Shutoff) - Upshift Module
83-84 Mustang/Capri Manual Transmission 4cyl - E3BZ-12B528-A Yellow Orange 1845RPM
85-86 Mustang/Capri Manual Transmission 8cyl - E5ZZ-12B528-A Dark Grey 1450RPM
No such box for automatic transmissions (duh...you don't shift those).

This makes me want to go look under the dash of my '85 coupe... it WAS a 4 cyl./auto car, and it USED to have a cruise control column in it
1994 GT coupe-- 243k still runs great!
1988 LX hatch-- GT V8 conversion project on rotisserie!
1977 II Hatch-- 65K orig. miles
1993 Lincoln Mark Viii-- rebuilt and angry! 4.10's, 3500 stall, exhaust etc.
2004 Ranger FX4 Level II - DD gas hog

OK I found an engineering number cross reference for that module:
E5ZF-12B528-AB = E5ZZ-12B528-A = Up-Shift light module as per my post above.
I can't find the Red Box cross ref number.
-Mike
And, because I climbed in all upside down and was balancing on my head, here's close-ups of the RED box connector:
Looks like the same plug and wiring as the grey box.
I would say they are all up shift indicator boxes then. No idea what they would do differently.

its a flight data recorder
It's where the gremlin lives that cuts off your light when you close the door people. gosh! Some gremlin's like red housing situations and some like dark grey.
1985 Mustang GT:
347 stroker
Holley 750 double pumper
xe274hr comp cam
Victor jr. intake
RPM aluminum heads
roller rockers
equal length shorty headers
electric fan
afco aluminum radiator
american thunder series flowmasters
pace setter off road h-pipe
chrome OEM cobra rims
That's a Deceleration Fuel Shutoff Upshift module for an 85/86 Mustang and Capri with automatic transmission. The red color indicates the upshift RPM (1800).
Dark gray ones were used on the V8's with manual transmission (1450 RPM) and the four cylinder models used a yellow/orange box (1845 RPM).
My 85 GT is a factory 5-speed car, and had a red box.
According to the '85 Mustang/Capri EVTM I'm looking at right now, all five of those wires and the jumpered Black wire correspond to the 5.0L upshift module.
Black/Yellow dots
Dark Green/Yellow dots
Tan/Light Blue hashes
Black (jumpered to another position)
Pink/Black stripe

See the last page of the 1985 wiring diagram...."upshift module".
Looks like it's an upshift light box. Both my 85 5-speeds have them - one gray and one red. Maybe a change during the model year - the red box is in a car built in Sept 84 and the gray is in a car built in June 85.
Just to follow up (sorry about the delay...) - Yes, there is a black wire jumper to one position.
And, yes, the green wire has a yellow dot. Hard to see without a flashlight.
Thanks for all the feedback!!
You could do this the smart way by looking at the wiring diagram
OR
you could unplug it and see what doesn't work? *not responsible for any broken parts*
82 Capri RS, 5.8L, solid drop mounts, areomotive fuel system, 3" exhaust, ROD six speed, MM torque arm suspension, "mathis" 90 k-member, 04 cobra control arms, h&r springs, koni shocks, m-2300-k, caged, battery relocate
did all 5 speed cars have these? my '85 doesnt have an upshift light.
It should have one. Look closely at the left hand indicators on the dash.
In 85 models there is a vacuum line (look for the stiff cream colored one on the passenger side) off the carburetor and if yours has a broken line or an aftermarket carb installed, you most likely won't see the light turn on.
One other thing that won't allow the light to show is that some people hate the indicator and pull the bulb out.
Hello everybody, I work in parts at a ford dealer, I punched in the numbers, and all 12B528's are upshift modules and the red and gray both supercede to the dark gray box of 1450rpm manual tranny 85/86. Red or gray just change to the same number E5ZZ-12B528-A. Seems to be more then just a module for a upshift light if it is being called by the catalog a decelaration fuel shutoff - upshift module. Now it might be wrong on the online part look up we use but it doesnt mention carb or efi, just 85 and 86. I want to check my 86 then, I haven't noticed or checked for one before. Sorry for the ramble, you guys need a number checked let me know, thanks, Xavier
Yup its a deceleration fuel shut off- upshift module, control assembly.
-Currently Searching for "The One"
Why would a car that has a carburetor and a mechanical fuel pump have an electronic fuel cut-off module?
Where is this fuel shut-off module in the EVTMs or wiring diagrams?
I have never seen an 85 or 86 5.0 with a upshift light that works. I new they used the same front console cover with the 'egg-shell' that says 'shift', but have never seen one work in the 85-86 5.0 manual cars. I have had 4 85 and 86 5.0 manuals and none of mine ever worked.
Has anyone who has an 85 or 86 5.0 manual ever seen one work.... ??
