It's funny you say that 'cause the same thing crossed my mind!!!

One odd thing I noticed is that even in nuetral, foot off the clutch, with a steady rev the light will come on. Weird.

I'll try posting a vid to Photbucket.

The light may appear erratic, but I was showing how it goes off when giving more gas then lights up again when you let off the gas.

They did work. Often though, the carb gets swapped, the emissions get removed and then the light never works again.

My family had 2 cars back in the day with that light, a 1982 Escort Wagon, a 1987 Escort GT and maybe the old 84 Ranger had it too.

It was a piece of EVIL foisted on Ford owners that was engineered by some masterful Chevy owners to drive us crazy. It lights up all over the place, all at the wrong times. I pulled the bulb on my car just to make sure it could never accidentally start working.

Mine did and still works perfectly, even after 330000 miles. Never had a problem following the shifts either. It's the true miser tool and very accurate to my shifting "senses". I tend to begin shifting right when it lights up.

On a 5.0 it might work to a degree. But on a 1982 Escort Wagon with a wimpy 4cyl. There is NO way to get up any kind of incline by following that light. I think they must have calibrated the thing out in Kansas or some place.

It goes by engine RPM and vacuum, and as long as the transmission is not in top gear.

engine vacuum has to be above 3Hg (no load)
engine speed has to be over 1920 RPM

Those Escort Wagons should have a downshift only light and it should be illuminated the entire time. LOL.
