    Default pinion bearing removal..

anyone w/ a creative way (cheap) of pulling one? i am almost tapped out and still have to buy other things. autozone said they did not have one, but the guy was a dummy and could find a 87 mustang listing on the computer, even though we where stairing right at it..

another question is this a pinion shim?

edit, i know its not, i guess there is not one on this pinion? is that possible that there was no shim from the factory! what is this? does it go between the seal and the bearing (outer)?

i think it's called an oil slinger.. probably goes between the seal and bearing like you said. And my way to get the pinion out is to remove the differential, loosen the nut until the edge of the nut is flush with the shaft of the pinion gear and hammer it out.. or back the nut off more than the shaft and smash the nut(you'll have to replace it), but it beats rethreading those hardened steel threads... you could also put a piece of aluminum or brass(i used a brass punch and a 3lb mini sledge) between the hammer and pinion to help...good luck it's a huge PITA especially if there's dirt falling on your face

The pinion shim will be between the inner race of the rear pinion bearing, and the
shoulder of the pinion gear. You can't really see it until you remove the bearing.

so the ratech spacer i have goes where the crush sleeve goes and the spacers it came w/ go behind the rear bearing? i think i understand.

No, if you're talking about the Ratech solid pinion spacer, the shims that are the
same internal diameter as the spacer are for adjusting pinion bearing preload after
you've set pinion depth. (Normally with only a bearing change, you'll just reuse
    the original pinion shim.)
