Default stipped nut on the rear end.

I just bought a 8.8 posi rear end from a guy off californiafords.com. I was looking at the rear end everything looks good but i ran into a little problem. I believe its the bracket with a welded nut on it. Well, on of those nuts is stripped. What do you guys recommend doing? He also said it has 3:27's but how do i clarify that?

Which bracket are you talking about? As far as verifying gears, mark the pinion and the axle both at 12 o'clock with a crayon or grease pencil. Turn the pinion and count the revoutions it take to turn the axle 1 full revolution. With 3.27 gears it should take about 3.25 turns for 1 revoultion of the axle. Hence 3.27:1

Edit: Use the right rear axle and make sure the drum is off so there is no drag.

Gear oil depends on if it's a limited slip or not. I would use a good 80W 90 and put the additive in it if it's a limited slip.

what does the bracket do? hold on the quad shock? lower control arm? i would remove the nut with some kind of air chisel or grinder and buy a new nut and use a wrench to hold it while tightening.. take a look to see if the nut is actually welded to the housing or is on a clip, ford uses lots of clipped nuts to make assembly faster

Well since your asking about the gasket, I will assume you have or will be taking the cover off. That being the case, the ring gear will have a number stamped into it. Davide the higher number by the lower and that is the gear ratio. The numbers represent the number of teeth on the ring gear and on the pinion.

Now as for the gasket, I never use one...they leak. I clean it up real good and put a bead of permatex on the cover and let it set up for a bit before installing it. Never had one leak.

The nut sound like the quad shock bracket. Only one welded on that I can think of. I personally would grind he weld and weld on a new nut but of you dont have a welder, you might be able to tap it a size bigger or get really creative and use a longer bolt with a nut next to the stripped one.

If it was just sealer to begin with, most of it will peel right off and then I use a gasket scraper or razer blade to get the rest and then wipe it all down with brakleen. I like the hi-temp black stuff but others work just as well. Just don't put it on right away. Let it set up for a little bit or it will just squish out.

Drill the stripped nut out. Run a longer bolt through the stripped nut. Put another nut on behind the stripped nut and torque. Done.

Valvoline, Mobil are good. Your local parts store will have the additive you need. Brand doesn't matter as long as you put it in.

is it necessary to put limited slip lube though? because i know some Valvoline gear lubes already have that mixed in.

I agree. I just put in a tube of the posi additive and then fill it up with standard 80/90.

Nearly any sealant will work, even clear silicone used on houses, there's no need for expensive stuff, just remember to go around every bolt hole, and put on enough so no gaps, wipe off the excess after your done.

Ya, I personally use the hi-temp stuff but it probably isn't real nessecary. I think the key is to let it skin up. Don't just put it on and then install the cover right away.

I would just get a set of decent control arms and throw the quads away.

    Actually, that's what I did...

3.75, last time I checked. Ford has been using Motorcraft Synthetic 75W-140 gear oil lately in their Traction-Lok equipped axles, along with a bottle of Friction Modifier.

Also, Ford has never made a "posi" rear axle. Ever.
