Why would "resonators" require heat shields? Why - if catalytic converters require heat to function properly - would Ford put them that far from the engine?

The two forward units are a three-way catalyst (TWC) which reduces NOx to N2 and O2, and converts HC and CO to H2O and CO2, and the two rearward units are an oxidation catalyst (OC) which, with the addition of secondary air from the Thermactor pump, convert HC and CO to H2O and CO2.

i know what is in them and what exactly they are. they are considered resonators, not cats.

Then please explain to me why those supposed "resonators" have heat shields on them, just like the converters way back there behind them. And please explain to me why only two converters - which require heat to work properly - were placed THAT far away from the engine.

I have heard them called that but I have no idea what the difference would be.

    They've been called:

    pre-cats
    toeboard converters
    light-off converters
    converter pre-heaters

Whatever you want to call them, they ARE three-way catalysts. They operate at a lower temperature and are that close to the engine so as to be effective enough until the oxidation catalysts - which are further away from the engine - can start working properly.

There is a good photo on capriman86 site, look at his car domain pics under the 20th aviv. GT350 ones, the last photo shows the correct exhaust pics.I always thought the first "thing" was the resinator, and the 'bigger thing" was the cat.

Have not been here for awhile. I had an 85 Stage 1 Dominator. They came with Hooker Long Tube Headers. As for the B303 Cam. It definetley worked in the 85 carbed Engine because I put it in mine along with a pair of 289 ported heads and an Edelbrock intake in 87. I believe it was offered sometime in 86.

    Default More Info on Dominators

The following is an email I received from Dave Anderson. The original Builder Hired by Summit Ford to build the Dominators.

Subject: Re: Mustang Dominator GT from Summit Ford

Steve, We built a 302 with forged TRW pistons, Moly rings clevite bearings, a solid camshaft, Large valves & springs, etc. in the heads, double roller timing. At first we were selling the manifold and carb witht he engine but later the dealership just bought the base longblock.

Later when the dealership became worried about the emissions factor and fines they simply put stickers ont he cars and did some minor things and sold cars based on the reputation of the "real" Dominators.

Someplace in the boxes of old records there is probably an invoice listing everything that we did, but I do not have time to dig.

Will tell you a cute story though. Several years after we had done some of the forst engines, I recieved a phone call from a Dr. in overland park. He wanted to know if we were the builders of the Dominator engines. I said yes, and He said I want to tell you something. And then He went on to say he had owned many a foreign sports car including a Porche and the Gt he owned was faster and more fun then any of them. then he wanted to know if we would do a tune up. We don;t do that and directed him to one of our racing customer shop owners who was capable of adjusting solid lifters as well as do the proper tuning. He stayed in touch over the years and a couple of years back sold the car to someone who called and obviously were not too car savvy, so don't know what happened to it beyond that. But the original ownere had it around twenty years. Our intention in building the engine was to improve on the original concept 271 Hspr used in the mustang in 1965. It biggest advantage was the slightly increased compression, larger valves and a solid cam that easily allowed 6500 RPM when you fed it the gas.

    Hope that helps a little.

I am going to revive this thread because I think it needs updating. Early in the thread there was mention of 1 T-top anny Dominator and a query of weather or not it still exists. I can delightfully say with much certainty that is most definitely does. I met the owner while selling some parts on craigslist. We were talking cars and he mentioned that he had a GT350 dominator that he bought new and had just recently brought out of storage where it had sat since 1988. I steered him and his Son Ryan to this site and invited them to our recent BBQ we had here at my place in KCK. Definately one of the coolest fox cars I have ever seen for me simply because of its oneofakindnest...thata word?.....

Anyhow, here are some pictures I took of the car when Bud and Ryan wereggod enough to bring it out of us to see in person. If the original poster is still listening, we are having another BBQ here in October. How cool would it be to have exactly half of the GT350 Dominators ever built in the same place some 25 years later....just throwin that out there

And I might add that if this bitch ever goes up for sale, shes mine...SO BACK OFF!!

I emailed the person to check it out. Its possible but not very likely to be a Dominator. With the scoop being black, I would say it was added by the owner. Also I see hood pins. Which were not a usual piece on a Dominator.

As for an update on GT350 Dominators. I have uncovered 3 cars so far and have been told of the existence of a 4th. That one I was told was a convertible. I have yet to confirm its existence. I have confirmed from former sales reps from Summit Ford that there were actually several convertible Dominators made. But I have yet to see a single one still in existence. So the search continues...
