Default 17" steelies on the car

I decided to throw some tires on the 17" steelies referenced in the other thread and put them on the car:

I think it looks really sweet, but I need a little more positive offset cuz the rear tires rub up inside the wheel well over bumps. I'm kinda bummed. These would probably fit perfectly on 5-lug Fords that don't have 96+ front spindles/control arms and Mark VII rear ends (which my car has).

Part of it is has to do with the fact that I'm running 245 tires on 7" wide wheels, but I like the "flared tire" look. If am to keep these wheels, I may have to step down to 235 tires. Not sure if I want to do that.

Regarding lug fitment... I painted the lug nut seat on the wheel with some red paint and tightened it up. Undid the lugnut and saw that the lugnut had contact all the way around. Probably helps that the hole itself is rather large and allows the lugnut to "sink in" a good amount. You can also see what .7mm difference looks like.

As promised to Dean, I tried the center caps from my dad's Crown Vic and they fit fine:

I would like to see what the flatter center caps that the CVPIs actually use would look like on here.

And here's the comedy Dodge hubcap option. It's just propped on there because I'd need the special collared Dodge lugnuts to make it work.

    More pics here: http://www.ltdlx.org/gallery/magnumwheels

I'll run these wheels for a while but I dunno if I'm going to keep them or not. I really wish I could find a set of Crown Vic 17" steelies cheap.

Would rolling the fender lip make a difference? I agree that the Crown Vic steelies would probably be ideal with the 96 components and Mark VII length axles, but the wheel center is almost flush with the lip which would look odd.

It's not hitting the lip. It's rubbing up inside the wheel well in the "flared" part of the body when going over dips and bumps. Probably didn't help that I had my old wheels in the trunk while driving around.

Looks just like I had said all along, they fit the studs just fine with absolutely no issues at all.

Those wheels definitely give it that "cop car" look...

You gotta find a way to make that work because that looks Awesome!

Looks like a car Clint Eastwood or Burt Reynolds would drive in the movies.

    Tough.

The aluminum look doesn't do it for me.

On closeup that is one clean car! Your exposed metal isn't even rusted. Man here in Mi. even the new cars setting in the dealers lots have more rust! Whats considered a good Mi. car is one that only has a few small rust holes.

    Hi Scott,

Thanks for being the Guinia pig on this. Looks great! I'm going to get a set for my '83 2 dr sedan. The 215/65/17 should fit no problems except it'll throw my speedo off 5mph at 60mph. I like the civilian CV hub cap.

Please refresh my memory, inorder to use the CV hub cap one needs the CV lug nuts?

Yes, you'll need the special Ford collared lug nuts that came on Rangers, Explorers, Vics, etc. Should be fairly easy to find.

I like it! The lower profile tire looks good on those from a deceptive point of view. The cruise pic is awesome and would be by new avatar for sure if I were you. It says so much being different like that amoungst a pack of mustangs. Do you think these wheels will work with the common 5 lug swap Lincoln rotors or will they have the same issue with caliper clearance vs. the sealed hub 94-up stuff.

I honestly don't know about the Lincoln swap. I thought the only drawback to the Linc swap is that the center cap could not be installed on some wheels with that setup due to the tall dust cap.

    LTDScott,

It looks like you've got a great road car there.

A few years back we had a black 85.
If I knew about this board back then i'd kept it.

+25mm offset. Not sure what the equivalent backspacing would be.

If they are 7" wide rims that would put the backspace at about 4.5".
