    I have seen people use bulkhead fittings and blocked fuel lines like you said. Something like this-

    Interestingly enough, user "5.0 bird" just posted about replacing the fuel pump and hose in his '84 Tbird. It, too, has the return line all the way to the bottom of the fuel pump assembly - http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthre...=1#post1920987. It's unfortunate that Ford chose to go with the short return pipe on the Mustangs, and surprising it took people/businesses so long to figure out that's suboptimal and offer an aftermarket upgrade.
