When I was an AMSOIL dealer I ran their S2K 0W30 and synth. filter, doing changes about every 12-17K miles. Now it's Mobil 1 5W30 and Ford filter every 5-7K miles.

It (Amsoil) is very good stuff, though all the major brands are. My understanding is Amsoil, Mobil 1, Redline and Royal purple are probably about the best of them. Any synthetic is better than the best dino. I use Wal-Mart brand in the Taurus. Valvoline manufactures it. I change it every 4 months/4000 miles and for under $14 for 5 quarts it is still very inexpensive to use.

Awesome link! Everyone should read that and look through those forums! Looks like I am using 3 very good oils (Valvoline MaxLife, Rotella T synthetic, and Mobil 1)- which makes me feel a bit better about how long my engines will last. No more Lucas oil for me. I used it once and didn't like the results, but seeing that guy's test on that website made me adament never to use it again.

I bought 5 quarts of pennzoil 15-40 diesel motor oil to break in my new 351 when it's done, was that a bad decision? nobody has mentioned pennzoil much so i thought i'd ask..

    Mobil1 15-50.
I worked on an oval track car for about 12 years.
Even with biweekly oil changes using conventional 50 weight race oil there would be signs of slug starting to build up and at mid season tear downs ther would be quite a bit of bearing wear.
After switching to 15 50 Mobil1 the inside of the engine was almost as clean as the day it was assembled and the bearings looked great.
I was sold from then on.

Nobody mentions Penzoil for a reason...

Actually, I have heard from many sources that almost all the other oils out there are better and keep the motor cleaner.
I would also stay away from the Q as it is a higher percentage parrafin based oil.

Pennzoil is good if you like sludge. Every motor I tear apart that's from the '70s is caked in the stuff....

I use 10W-40 Valvoline Conventional. I've tried just about anything. I still go though a quart every 200-300 miles. The engine has over 250,000 miles on it, so it is what it is. I've replaced the valve cover gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, timing cover gaskets and rear main seal.

Take a look at this site for an analysis of a great many oils.PQIA goes out and buys oil off of store shelves and analyzes them and posts the results on their free site. They have posted warnings on some deficient oils and got them pulled from some states. Some of the oils will surprise you.

Here lately I have been running Warren semi-synth in my vehicles with good results ,after looking at the analysis of their oils I feel pretty good esp since I get their stuff @ 2.25 a qt.

    10 years. Wow!

Ive torn down more sludge filled strictly pens motors than I care to think about. Too many if I never see another one in my lifetime. Really crappy oil in the grand scheme of things considering I know full well those motors had their oil changed regularly and good money was basically spent on really bad oil.

Ive seen motors fired up and broken in with synthetic oils. I strongly discourage this as every time I've seen anyone go near synthetic before the motor was broke in ended up with a motor that used a lot of oil from day one.

Its not quite so cut and dried on modern engines but lord knows my 2013 3.6L Equinox I bought new drank oil from new on and never stopped. It started out horrible at a quart in 500, improved to a quart in 600 miles then got worse as the odometer went up. QT in 500 from a new car is not excessive says GM - I bet we all didn't know that! What a piece of crap!

I would only run synthetic from new instead of switching after it's broke in if manufacturers specifications strictly specify synthetic.

My 2008 Mountaineer and my 2008 MarkLT have both held up well switching to full synthetic after 40K. The Mountaineer would not burn a drop in 10K highway miles on full synthetic.

My vote for a small block Ford is 10w40 summers and 10w30 winters if it's getting driven while it's extremely cold. (To avoid twisting off the oil pump drive)

I tore the intake off my 1986 GT's motor for a swap to a Typhoon EFI when the motor had over 440K on it. It was and is clean as a whistle inside.

I've ran Mobile 10w40 in my 86 Mustang and changed it every 3000 miles the entire 25 years I've owned it. That's about the only favor I've done for the car - I've always basically beat the crap out of it because that is what I enjoy doing. Drive it like you stole it comes to mind.

Ive seen similar clean internals from cars ran on Valvoline. To a lesser extent with motorcraft and Havoline too.

Q, well... hard to say how long it was ran.

You are wise beyond your years Grasshopper, Pennzoil and Quaker State are highly suspect when it comes to sludge buildup, I learned this at least 50 years ago and I've seen it many times because of what I did for a living. With that being said, I've always run Valvoline conventional motor oils in all my vehicles.

The 86 gets 5 fresh quarts of 10w40 Valvoline every 1000 miles because it doesn't get driven a lot.

Rotella 15/40 and mostly motocraft filters. I change whenever it starts looking dirty on the stick. I wish they made 20/50 for summer.
