Hey all, What are you guys using in your mustangs for motor oil. Im looking to see what the popular grades of oil are. 10w-40, 10w-30, 5w-30, 20w-50, etc.
or for that matter just post what you are using.

no slot for 0w-20?
i run whatever junk is laying around. it proves to work well.
i've run the 0w-20 a few times to get some really fast times. my bearings were hammered when i changed them last year.
I generally run what the manufacturer calls for, but as the mileage goes up so does the weight. Every Mustang I have ever owned I've used valvoline 20w50 racing oil in except the 83GT which I put 10w30 in. I use RotellaT 15w40 in the Dodge diesel and the VW uses Pennzoil but the oil changes are free for life so I don't know what weight.
83 GT Turbo
Im running 10W40. If I run 5W30 my lifters rattle like crazy and my oil pressure drops off a bot after it warms up. I run 10w40 over 10w30 because it flows like a 10w but protects like a 40w.
I just changed the oil in my 79 and 84 for the first time since I got them and used 10w40. When I get a new motor going for the '84 I'm going to try 5w30 synthetic.
in my 84 which has 130k i use 10w40 during the summer and 10w30 in the winter.

10W30 is what Ford recommends for my 1989 5.0L. I use Castrol GTX and have used Castrol in all my cars since the early 80s. I read a very well done engine oil test report back then (late 70s/early 80s) that showed that the Castrol oils performed very well in many tests.

My dad and I have used Castrol GTX 10w40 in our 85 for all 175k miles. Oil and filter change every 3000 miles. Oil pressure is 45 at idle when warm and 55-60 @ 2000 rpm. I want to do a compression test to get a better idea of the engine's health, but it feels very strong. I'll tell you this, though, I won't put anything else in the car except 10w40 castrol gtx. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I use 15w-40 because as a diesel motor oil it has much better extreme pressure lubricating qualities due to the fact that diesel engines still use flat tappet cams. Gasoline engine oil chemistry has been changed in recent years due to tighter emissions standards and doesn't have to provide as much extreme pressure lubrication with the use of roller tappets. I would never think of breaking in a new camshaft using any oil other than 15w-40. I have been using Castrol 15w-40 for sometime now in my flat tappet 5.0 and I am quite satisfied. Hot Rod magazine some months ago had an article about this very subject. Their findings were very well documented. Dick
I use 10W40 Valvoline MaxLife in the Capri. In my Mustang, I switch between 5W40 Rotella Full Synthetic and 15W50 Mobil 1 Full Synthetic

I've run 20w50 in my 5.0 for years and the engine is always clean when I tear it down, never seen a bad bearing.
I run 4 quarts of castrol gtx 10-40 and a quart of lucas oil stabilizer. when i first got this car on the first oil change i put something like 5-30 in itand after 1k miles or so it began to smoke really bad and was eating a quart a week. someone mentioned to put 10-40 and a bottle of lucas in, so i did this and the last oil change i just did recently i noticed that it did not consume much oil maybe a 1/2 quart between a 6 month period and about 2500-3000 miles. my car also leaks oil a bit from the vcg's and oil pan so some also prob leaked out too.

Mobil 1 10W30 for the life of my Mustang, and there wasn't a single speck of sludge to be found when I did a headswap at 155K. Regular oil and filter changes every 3,000 miles certainly helped too, I'm sure.
I find that it runs a bit better with 5W30 during winter.

In the Pony, fully synth(mobil 1 or amsoil) 10-40 now, I may go 10-30 though.
In the Taurus fully synth(wal mart synth (made by valvoline)) 10-30 summer, 5-30 dead of winter.
In the Goldwing 1/2 and 1/2 synth(amsoil)/dino(Castrol) 10-40 summer, 10-30 3 months dead of of the winter. Ridden year round. (Wet clutch. Have not wanted to try full synth)
The beast truck gets cheap 10-40 every 4 months. It averages 250 miles a month or less though.
