    Question Trim color ?s

Hey all, I think from my searching the general concensus here is that the trim for the 79-86 cars is the non-reflective Ford Matte Black. If I'm incorrect I'd like to know now as I plan on painting my 86GT eventually. I plan on removing all the trim and sail panels to paint identically from the car itself. If it is Ford Matte Black, is it still availible from Ford in spray cans and can I ask for it by that name? Is there a part # I can have them reference? Thanks!

I believe that 86 GTs had the same charcoal trim that 85 GTs had. SEM Bumper Coater #39153 is a dead match to my 85 GT, I checked it with parts of the trim that had been covered by other parts (no possible sun fade). You should be able to find it at most auto body supply stores. The black trim you describe would have been on LXs though.

The only black trim on 85-86 Mustangs/Capris was the atenna bezel, wipers and door handles. Everything else was charcoal grey.

I don't know where you found your "consensus" but it was NOT on this site! We know better!

So would 85 GTs vs 86 GTs have a different color of charcoal or gray hood decal then too? All of the suppliers seem to sell the same decal for both years. NOS decals are listed for both years also. I am not debating with 86-123, just want make sure I buy the right decal, lol. Replacement hatch decals also come in black, I just put a new one on my 85 a few weeks ago. Although I have seen a 9L White 86 GT vert that had a silver deck lid decal with no evidence that that car was repainted, I looked that car over VERY close because I was considering buying it. Do I need to replace the "Mustang GT" decal for it to be correct too? If it's wrong I will either have one cut in the right color or see if I can find a NOS piece. LOL, what sucks is that I was selling these cars when they were new so I've seen a bunch of them but for the life of me I just can't remember some of these details.

Ok, so the antenna and it's base, the door handles and the windshield wiper arms are all supposed to be standard flat black then? So, the body side moldings around the car and bumpers are supposed to be the non-reflective Ford Matte black? I thought all GTs, not just LXs, were painted in this fashion?

As stated above, the majority of the trim, with those exceptions listed by negusm was CHARCOAL GREY, not black in 1985-1986.

This is a serious peeve of mine since I have seen so many 'restored' cars with black trim over the years.

I can definately verify the charcoal on the 85 GTs. There are portions of my car that have never been touched and are charcoal. I also was selling these cars in 85/86 and saw them right off the truck. Like I said before SEM #39153 is what you probably want and definately would for a 85 GT. It's also good paint, lays down real nice for rattle can stuff. Should cost you about $11 per can, takes about 4 cans do redo everything on the car.

The whole reason I started this thread is to -make sure- and I got some conflicting information, and so what? That's what this entire forum is for afterall, to get correct information. I'm sure you have seen some -restored- 4-eyes that were improperly painted and I think we probably all have at one point, although some of us may not be as well trained to tell. Again, frankly I want to get mine back together and it done properly, which is why I asked in the first place.

If you want to post correct or verifying information, that's all good because that's what I want. There is, however, an un-flaming way to go about it.

Thanks Greg D for the information on the spray paint. Got some ordered already.

Yeah, evlgt85 got a little uppity on this one I think.

First of all nothing is flat black on the car. It is satin. Flat black doesn't reflect light much at all.

The following trim is satin black: door handles, antenna bezel, antenna and windshield wipers.

The side rub mouldings, windshield mouldings, door frames, hatch trim, tailight trim, raccoon eyes, sail panels are all Charcoal Grey.

I believe the cowl cover is charcoal grey too. I am unsure on the hood blackout decal.

Charcoal grey for 85-86 Mustangs (and Thunderbirds) is really halfway between what artists would call charcoal and medium grey. Usually charcoal grey is almost black.

Reiterating information is hardly flaming OR uppity. Clarification was the only intent of that post.

Flaming constitutes attacks, insults, and other negative forms of comments directed towards a user, none of which were included in my post.

Well, maybe "uppity" wasn't the right word. But I did get a small feeling a frustration with the big capitalized "charcoal grey".

The Hood "blackout" decal is indeed charcoal on a GT, my 85 still has the original one on it. Only difference I have ever seen in the decal is that some colors of cars have a second white "GT" decal in the hood decal reverse. The cowl cover is also charcoal on my car with the white areas directly under it also painted to match. Only discrepency I have seen is that my wiper arms are charcoal too. As far as I could tell the only thing that was ever repainted on this car when I got it was the left front fender & left fender apron. Knowing what I have seen from all the Fords I have had though, the only thing consistent is inconsistency, lol. Hope this helps, Greg

Be careful when you say all 86's were trimmed in grey. I ordered my 86GT in Dec of 85 and my trim is grey with a silver mustang GT sticker on the rear deck. My 86 has quite a few odd ball things on it left over from 85.

My friend ordered his 86GT about March of 86. It was black with saddle (I think that's what Ford called it) interior and it was trimmed in non-gloss black. That was straight from Ford, not a lot car. I guess maybe with black the trim was black, but it was not grey. I have never noticed other black ones.

4-speed, one thing to remember is the trim color can have kind of an optical illusion to it. My 9L GT looks like it's trimmed in Black from a distance and definately looks like black trim in photos. It's most definately charcoal in person. I also saw a 86 GT with a Silver decal on the deck, 9L White car just like mine. Mouldings etc. on that car were charcoal but I was driving my 05 the day I went to look at it so I didn't have anything for a comparison to see if it was the same color of charcoal. I am still a little confused about the Turbo GT decal (without the word Turbo) that was on the hatch of my 85 when I got it, as far as I could tell the rear of the car was never touched. I needed new door mouldings for my 85, I found used ones but from 2 different cars, right side showed up as charcoal, drivers side is black but was painted. The black moulding appears to have been factory painted, I was testing some paint strippers etc. on the old moulding off of my GT and found that the one that came off the car was painted too, charcoal over charcoal. The painted over was just a touch darker, don't know what that tells us but.......? I never saw a Black trimmed GT back in 85/86 (cept the 84 ragtop that was still in the showroom) when I was selling them but with Ford who knows? I did see one NOS hood blackout for sale once that was listed as Black but who knows?

There have been several low mileage black Mustangs (and one Capri) go through ebay. They have all had the charcoal grey trim.

Your story would be the first I have heard of an 85-86 black car with black trim.

There is some debate on white cars that I have heard. But usually it comes from ebay pictures where the contrast between the white and charcoal grey makes the picture look like the trim is black.

Here is a black 85 Capri with the charcoal moulding. Supposedly the car is a super low mileage example.

About build oddities, in a not too distant Mustang Monthly, which they had an article about the 1984 Turbo GTs, they mentioned that in the fall of 83, they got an early 1984 Turbo GT from Ford that had the Turbo sticker on one side of the car and the 5.0 badge on the other side of the car!

This aligns with what I know about the 86 SVO also for the only black - other than the spats.
