Default Axle Tags: I need 'em!!!

Anybody that has a '79-'86 Capri, Mustang, or SVO, I need the information from your rear axle tag. I need all the codes from the tag, and the model year it came from. If you can take a picture of it or scan it and send it to me that would be even better. Get them from the junkyards too!

This is for a decoding page for axle tags that I'm working on.

    Thanks!

Too bad you didn't say anything sooner. I scrapped my old 7.5 about 6 months ago.

Early ('79-'82 or '83) will be especially helpful.

Didn't have that one...Mike comes through again!

However, that doesn't tell me how the Build Dates are on the tags. The early tags have a 'build week' instead of a specific day of the month. Just trying to nail down what it looked like and when it changed.

Ah, see, even a '79 tag has the day of the month and not a letter for the week of the month.

i'd have to agree with you there, because in your books, the stamp on the 79-86 flywheels are actually the 87-93, and vice-versa,
but hey, at least when people show you you can correct it. you'll have to write your own book of codes at some point, at least it'll be accurate and you'll know it for a fact.
and since i have to put a rear transmission seal in tomorrow, i'll check the tag on my 85 for you and take a pic.

Depends which one you use ... the little red one or the big yellow one
The later is not always right for '79 by the way.

Not sure if you want it but here is the info from the tag from the original axle from my 78 Mercury Zephyr 4-dr (originally 3.3L I-6/3-spd manual trans):

    WGX-A 8CA
    2.73 7.5 920C

When I converted my Zephyr to 5.0L/T-5/8.8" I dumped the axle but kept the tag as a momento. When I read your post that was the first time I had thought about that tag since I took it off the axle in 1998. I had to find it on my workbench! LOL.

BTW the door decal axle code was 8 and the cars assembly date was March 20 1978 which lines up pretty good with the axle date of the 1st week of March 1978.

Paul: Yes, any Fox Ford of the same era will do. Thanks.

KIALUAZ: Without getting more codes from the axle housing itself to tell you what it cme out ofa, I can only tell you that it's an 8.8" w/ 3.27:1 gear and Traction-Lok differential, built January 31, 1990.
