    Default TRX wheel project

Here is a shot of my TRX wheel project. I posted this project on www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com and thought there might be some 4-eye ThunderCat fans here that would recognize the 83-84 only style Metric wheels.

Mickey Thompson will release the 295-50-16 Drag Radials in May and the 295-45-17 Drag Radials as well.

Going to be a fun year!!

Thanks. I have 4 Mustang 79-84 Metric wheels that I am going to hack up and machine the centers. They have the same dimensions as the T-Bird centers so everything should fit perfect.

Those kick ass! So you cut the centers out of the wheels and adapt them to the 17" hoops?

You are correct. I had a machine shop do the final finishing of the diameter to fit inside.

I rough cut the original wheel with a chop saw to get the center out.

Finally I will get the 83 TRX wheel look on my 83 Heritage T-Bird I have always wanted while using fat tires.

I found some 16 x 8 wheels at the NMRA Finals in 2005. Paid $ 20.00 for both.

I got really excited when I discovered that the TRX centers fit perfect inside those wheels (after machining)

I have not gotten to the road test portion because I am waiting for my tires.

When the road test is finished then I will post more info.

I wish I had a Lincoln MK VII 16" mesh wheel to hack up. They would look good on our 89 MK VII !

I have (1) 14 inch T-Bird "8 hole " wheel I am going to cut the center out of next.

Plus, I am going to cut up those 79-84 Stang wheels. Just have to find someone around here that has a Stang to put them on.

    Here is another view:

I really want to try 315-35-17 drag radials next.

The ones on it now are 255-45-17

Not sure. I think they are centerline but I cannot find any markings.

I've always wondered what it would cost to have, say, Colorado Customs, Billett Specialties, or one of the bigger billett wheel companies machine you a one-off set of standard sized rims that matched the TRX design.....guess this is alot easier and probably cheaper? They look awesome, keep up the good work!! I'm betting some guys with Pace cars and the like would be all over those so they could actually drive their cars more often on correct looking wheels and have good traction!! Keep us posted!! RAY

Well 83-88T-Bird Guy....I have 2 complete sets of the MKVII 16" mesh wheels, and can probably have a third with a phone call and a small portion of dead presidents (about $100). The one set I am cleaning, stripping, polishing the outer lip, and having the webs powdercoated black. The other set I was going to have widened, but now am thinking of having stretched to 17" and widened! The third.........are under a 91GT Saleen clone a friend of mine owns.

I thought the same thing about 7 years ago. If they loaded a factory wheel in a 3 axis machine and measured all the dimensions, then recorded all the data for future production, I would say the labor cost would be huge. (Big intial investment)

However, if 125 people committed to purchasing 4 wheels per and bought a run of say 500 wheels, it might become more reasonably priced.

I would say that given the popularity of the 79-84 Mustang TRX wheels for restorations, we might see this happen.

Until then, I will try this idea.

    Just a little update::

These are shots of my TC with 225-55-16 on front and 275-60-17 on the rear. Those 275-60-17 tires are off my 94 Lightning.

I will try to get a better side shot next week when I move the car. I plan on registering the car to drive next week and then I will do the road test on these TRX wheels.

Yea, I was playing around and was curious to see if those Lightning tires would fit. It sort of has that "Krass and Bernie" look from Car Craft magazine.
