I have a metal one sitting in the garage that I believe to be original to my 83. I can check the local VA yards for one this weekend.

We have to have a front plate in Mass as well unfortunately. I got pulled over last year in my Jeep in the middle of last winter for not having one on the front. I had the plate inside because the front bracket was broken when I bought the Jeep. I just got a warning and he said make sure I buy a new bracket. It was cold and rainy and I had a funny feeling he was going to pull me over for that. I drove w/o the plate for over a year and I knew it was just a matter of time.

a little off topic, but when i bought my '01 GT, i used 3M double sided tape to stick the plate on. no holes in the bumper cover. My SVO came from GA, and had no bracket. The first summer i drove it, i did the same thing. last year i 2 sided taped on a factory bracket, and then used the screws to attatch the plate to the bracket. works good.

I threw the one on my gt away. There are threaded holes on the bumper and you can bolt a plate right to it.

Prior to like 1986 they were metal. 86 and later were plastic. Don't quote me on the dates, I am unsure exactly when the switchover was.

You can either get a holder and bolt it to the bumper cover in the rub strip area or just forget it and bolt the license plate to the rub strip area.

50Resto used to sell the plastic ones. You can also call your Ford dealer and still source them I bet.

Other people have fabricated their bracket to bolt from underneath the bumper cover so they don't put holes in it.

I am pretty sure the brackets are the same for Mustangs and Capris.

Probably the same for 79-82 Mustangs and all Capris. One from a 79 Mustang won't fit an 83-84.

But, I think a later model Mustang bracket will fit the earlier Mustangs and Capris.

I believe that 79-82 are the same style and the Pace Car used a Black License Plate and the Cobra and 82 GT <-- pretty sure on the GT- used the Gray License Plate.

I'm sure sure on the differences over the years, but I need 2 or 3 of these. My '83 has the silver-colored holder.

Default 85-86 Capri and 85-89 Mustang

85-86 Capri and 85-89 Mustang are the same except for the special models like the SVO and 87 & up Gt. The number listed above is correct. I bought a used one a while back and just picked up a NOS one. If anyone is interested in the used one, let me know.
